Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

What was begun at Christmas is brought full circle and proclaimed again in a different way at the Ascension.  You might say that while the message of the Incarnation is "The Word became flesh," the message of the Ascension is "The flesh became Word."  READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

The Seventh Sunday of Easter

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Music NotesSheet music
With this past Thursday having been the feast of the Ascension, this morning we are enriched by much of the glorious music composed for this holy day. The Voluntaries are from Olivier Messiaen's four symphonic meditations on Ascension Day. Originally written for orchestra, these movements were later transcribed by the composer for organ. Messiaen was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, incorporating unique elements into his music such as Hindu rhythms, birdsong, and his technique of "communicable language."  Hymn 214 is one of many examples of fine Welsh tunes in our Hymnal. The text by Charles Wesley first appeared in 1739 and was later matched with this tune, which appeared in 1837. Llanfair is a typical Welsh tune of its period, melodically strongly based on the notes of the tonic chord of G in a simple AABA structure. The tune of Hymn 215 is also in AABA structure, but is a Dutch melody. It was introduced to Anglican hymnals through its inclusion in the English Hymnal where it was matched with this text. The Anthem by Gerald Finzi is one of the traditional musical "war horses" of the Church. Finzi was a student of E.C. Bairstow at York Minster and was influenced by Stanford, Vaughan Williams, and others. God is gone up is in large ABA form with the A sections characterized by fanfares sounding from both organ and choir. The B section in particular has many examples of text painting, such as chromatic dissonances on "heartcramping notes," ascending scale passages on "as it did ascend," and canonic imitation occuring at "mixing their music."

Vacation Bible School
Summer Christian Formation
Summer is usually the time we slow down a little, but the Christian Formation program uses the summer to try new things, introduce new programs and to just have fun. This year, our program kicks off with Pandamania Vacation Bible School from June 6-10, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Children and youth will explore how God is wild about them through stories, songs and crafts. Everyone is invited to the closing program on Friday, June 10, at 10:50 a.m. for a joyous celebration of the week.

Youth in grades 6-12 will have a chance to explore Lexington with new eyes and with new friends with the Wonderful Wednesdays Program. On June 8, the youth will meet at Good Shepherd at 12:30 p.m. We will go on a Scavenger Hunt (walking, so wear good shoes). Please bring about $15 to cover lunch at one place and dessert at another. Cameras are encouraged and sunscreen is a must. Future Wednesdays promise Gatti-town, Champs, miniature golf and more.

Lots more to come later in the summer, so stay tuned! Contact Deacon Lauren for more information about any of these activities.

United Thank OfferingUnited Thank Offering
Are you thankful for anyone or anything? Every penny collected for the United Thank Offering (UTO) In-Gathering is allocated each year for grants. Your thankful offerings combined with those of others have fed the hungry, clothed the poor, provided shelter for the homeless, made needed renovations, helped children improve reading skills, provided medical care, offered support to the children of prisoners, extended hospitality to cancer patients undergoing treatment far from home, and supported innovation in meeting these compelling human needs.

UTO is a ministry of the Episcopal Church that provides a way for men, women and children of the parish to give daily thanks to God. The mission of UTO is to expand the circle of thankful people by encouraging daily prayers, offerings and awareness of the abundance of God's blessings.

The Good Shepherd UTO In-Gathering will be on Sunday, June 12.
