From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

There have always been and perhaps always will be those who believe God uses natural disasters to punish humanity and those who try to pinpoint the end of history when God's judgment will be rendered. I am grateful to be a part of a tradition that believes "the universe is good, that it is the work of a single loving God who creates, sustains, and directs it" (BCP, 846).   READ MORE.

If you are traveling during this Memorial Day weekend, please be safe.  If not, I'll see you in church!

The Sixth Sunday of Easter

Collect

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Summer Publication ScheduleSummer Experiment
During June, July, and August, The Shepherd's Voice printed newsletter will be delivered to you near the beginning and the middle of each month instead of once a week. This e-mail edition will continue to be sent weekly and all the information that is in either edition will be included in the Sunday bulletin insert. If you read the e-mail edition and don't need the printed edition, please notify Cindy McKee. This summer experiment will help us assess reliance on electronic communication and reduce printing costs.
Music NotesSheet music
With today being "Rogation Sunday" we celebrate by singing hymns that emphasize the Creation. Hymn 412 catapulted into fame quickly after its completion in the late 1960s. A particular favorite line includes the phrase "loud boiling test tubes." The hymn is a series of calls to creation, humanity, music, and human endeavor to "sing to the Lord a new song!" Hymn 409 is an adaptation of the chorus "The heavens are telling" from Haydn's oratorio The Creation. The work, composed in 1797-98, was first performed in Vienna in 1798. The text of the oratorio chorus was a paraphrase of Ps. 19:1-2, and the paraphrase was expanded by Joseph Addison to include the first six verses of Psalm 19. The opening and closing Voluntaries this morning represent two different schools of organ composition from two vastly different eras, though both linked to J.S. Bach. Dieterich Buxtehude was famous in his own time as organist of the Marienkirche in Lübeck, Germany. A caveat of accepting that job was to marry the daughter of his predecessor, Franz Tunder, which he did in 1668. Buxtehude later offered his job to J.S. Bach and to Handel with this stipulation, but both men declined the offer. Buxtehude's Ciacona (i.e., chaconne, a term largely interchangeable with passacaglia during this period) features a repetitive bass line that forms the basis for a series of variations. Alexandre Guilmant, active 100 years after Bach's death, was influenced by Bach through studying with Jacques Lemmens in Brussels. Lemmens studied with Hesse, who studied with Bach himself. During the 19th and early 20th century multi-movement organ compositions gained great popularity. While Guilmant called these works "sonata," his contemporary Charles-Marie Widor called them "symphony." From 1871-1901 Guilmant was organist at the Church of La Trinité in Paris, and in 1896 succeeded Widor as professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory.

Vacation Bible School
Summer Christian Formation
Summer is usually the time we slow down a little, but the Christian Formation program uses the summer to try new things, introduce new programs and to just have fun. This year, our program kicks off with Pandamania Vacation Bible School from June 6-10, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. each day.  Children and youth will explore how God is wild about them through stories, songs and crafts. Everyone is invited to the closing program on Friday, June 10, at 10:50 a.m. for a joyous celebration of the week.

Youth in grades 6-12 will have a chance to explore Lexington with new eyes and with new friends with the Wonderful Wednesdays Program. On June 8, the youth will meet at Good Shepherd at 12:30 p.m. We will go on a Scavenger Hunt (walking, so wear good shoes). Please bring about $15 to cover lunch at one place and dessert at another. Cameras are encouraged and sunscreen is a must. Future Wednesdays promise Gatti-town, Champs, miniature golf and more.

Lots more to come later in the summer, so stay tuned! Contact Deacon Lauren for more information about any of these activities.
Karen Workman to be OrdainedKaren Workman
Karen Workman Booth, who is to be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Christ Church Cathedral, was a member of Good Shepherd for over 10 years before she went to Sewanee three years ago to obtain her degree in Theology. Her grandmother encouraged her to attend Good Shepherd, where she immediately loved the style of worship and was overwhelmed by the warmth of the parishioners' welcome.

Karen has been called to San Jose Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, Florida, where she will start her ministry on July 1. She will specialize in Outreach, Pastoral Care, and the Liturgy.

We celebrate with Karen as she starts on her path to priesthood. For the reception after her ordination, we are asking Good Shepherd members to provide finger food (sandwiches, cookies etc.). Please call Judi Woodford at 224-9593 or sign up in the Loggia on Sunday if you can provide food.

United Thank OfferingUnited Thank Offering
The United Thank Offering is not a ministry that affects the support for our parish budget. It is simply a thoughtful and prayerful opportunity to share recognition of your own blessings with someone who has a compelling human need. The blue envelopes are a tangible reminder to be thankful and use that thankfulness to help someone else. Good Shepherd's Spring Ingathering will be Sunday, June 12. You can donate by putting cash in the blue envelopes found in the pews, at the back of the nave and in the Loggia, or by writing  a check made out to Good Shepherd with UTO on the memo line. What are you thankful for?

Online Service Assignments
Worship Leadership Assignments
The monthly page of assignments is mailed to everyone scheduled to serve during the month. The same list is also available on the church webpage.  Click the words Worship, Music, Events on the navigational banner, then the monthly schedule you want to look at. The schedule is posted at least a week before the beginning of the month in which you are scheduled to serve.

Are you planning to frequently attend the 5 p.m. Sunday service? Contact Cindy McKee with your availability in June, July and August to be scheduled as eucharistic minister, lector, intercessor and/or usher for this service.

Online Directory
Online Pictorial Directory
There's a new pictorial directory in our future! It will be online   and password protected. Before and after Sunday services during May, parish photographers will be stationed in designated locations to take your photograph. When it is ready, you will receive an email message instructing you how to set up your password and access the directory. If you prefer, you will be  able to provide your own digital photo for the directory. Printed directories (without photos) will be made available to those who do not have computers.
