From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

A line from Shakespere's play As You Like It reminds us that there are "sermons in stones." He may have had in mind the great church buildings of the ages whose magnificent towers and arches have inspired people and pointed the way to God. The Jerusalem Temple was a sermon in stone. It was the center of the life of God's people for generations until it was destroyed by the Romans in the year 72 AD. Early Christians came to think of the Church as the new temple God was building to take its place. I'll see you in church!

Collect

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth,  and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The Rev'd Lillian Hyde, Guest PreacherLillian Hyde
The Rev'd Lillian Hyde will be our guest preacher this Sunday at Church of the Good Shepherd. She is the mother of Good Shepherd communicant Skip Kimbrough and was Fr. Ron Pogue's associate in Galveston. Currently, Lillian is one of the staff chaplains at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas. She is a graduate of Mississippi State University and the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest. She is an advocate for restorative justice and better residential facilities for elderly persons. Her husband, Bill, is also an Episcopal Priest and Rector of St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church near Houston's Johnson Spacecraft Center.

Music NotesSheet music
Sunday's Voluntaries are from Marcel Dupré's Fifteen Antiphons. These works started out as improvisations (performed in alternatim with the choir) at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The English director of Rolls-Royce, Claude Johnson, heard these improvisations in 1920 and commissioned Dupré to write them down, as best as he   could remember them, for a very handsome fee. Johnson was also instrumental in organizing Dupré's first concert   tours of England, thereby securing his success as a touring performer. The motet Venite comedite by late Renaissance master William Byrd is a superb example of this period and employs smooth part writing and an overall nature of piety. Byrd remained a Roman Catholic during a protestant era in England. His good favor and popularity are exemplified by the fact that he was permitted to compose, perform, and publish Latin choral music during a tumultuous religious period. He was indeed granted a 21-year monopoly on music publication (along with Thomas Tallis) during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Hymn 47, one of our most beloved morning hymns, honors each person of the Trinity and celebrates events, closely associated with each member, that happened on the first day of the week. For example, we celebrate God's creation of light on the first day of the week in st. 1 and Christ's resurrection and the visitation of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost also on the first day of the week in st. 2. The text of Hymn 432 is based on Psalms 148 and 150 and is matched with the quintessentially British hymn tune Laudate Dominum, whose opening phrase echoes the chime of countless parish and town clocks, is by the prolific C.H.H. Parry, one of the prime movers in the renaissance of English music at the turn of the 20th century.

Vacation Bible School
All PandaMania is Breaking Loose
Good Shepherd will host PandaMania Vacation Bible School from June 6 - 10, 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Children will discover that God is wild about them-a face that will change them forever. PandaMania is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences children see, hear, touch, and even taste!  Bible Point crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the PandaMania activities that help faith flow into real life.

The member cost is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The non-member cost is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.  Children must be siblings to receive the discount. Contact Deacon Lauren, register in the Loggia on Sunday or in the church office Monday through Thursday.

Are you ready for a wild adventure? Adult and youth volunteers are needed and required. It takes a group of caring, interested helpers to make this enriching and fun for the children who attend. Contact Deacon Lauren to offer your assistance.

When it is ready, you will receive an email message instructing you how to set up your password and access the directory. If you prefer, you will be  able to provide your own digital photo for the directory. Printed directories (without photos) will be made available to those who do not have computers.

Prepare Food
Food Needed for Ordination Reception
Karen Workman Booth and Paula Ott will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Sunday, June 5 at 4 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral (see above for all the details). Sponsoring churches provide a reception following the service. Since Karen is "ours" and Paula did her field placement here, many folks are needed to prepare finger sandwiches, appetizers and other pick-up foods for this happy occasion. Please sign up in the Loggia or contact Cindy McKee if you can assist.
Reading Camp Is Our Ministry Too!
Reading Camp is an intensive remedial literacy education program that serves struggling second, third and fourth grade readers in communities across our diocese and beyond. Reading Camp is staffed entirely by volunteers who are passionate about helping each child gain confidence in their reading skills, and it is free for each child accepted to attend.

Reading Camp needs our help in two vital ways: money for scholarships for Reading Camp children, and volunteers to work a camp. This Sunday, May 22, Good Shepherd will receive a collection for Reading Camp. Help share this experience and start a child on a path to reading. Your generous gifts of time and money will change a child's life! Make checks payable to Good Shepherd with Reading Camp on the memo line. For more information about Reading Camp, including volunteer information, click HERE.

United Thank OfferingUnited Thank Offering
The United Thank Offering is not a ministry that affects the support for our parish budget. It is simply a thoughtful and prayerful opportunity to share recognition of your own blessings with someone who has a compelling human need. The blue envelopes are a tangible reminder to be thankful and use that thankfulness to help someone else. Good Shepherd's Spring Ingathering will be on Sunday, June 12. Simply place your donation of cash or check (payable to Good Shepherd with UTO on the memo line) in the blue envelopes found in the pews, at the back of the nave and in the Loggia. What are you thankful for?
