Music Notes for Sunday Though it assumes an ominous spot in the Hymnal's numbering scheme, Hymn 666 is appropriate today as it echoes the text of today's Gradual Psalm 130 (Out of the depths). The tune (St. Bride) was composed for use with this text around 1760. The tune name honors the composer's parish of St. Bride's Church in London, though it was originally named St. Bridget (Bride and Bridget are alternative forms of the name of a fifth-century Irish saint). The mournful character of this tune, which lifts to the relative major only to fall sadly back to the minor tonic, is in a general way reminiscent of early metrical psalm tunes like Windsor (Hymn 642); it well suits the mood of Psalm 130. Hymn 457, which first appeared in an Episcopal Hymnal in 1826, has the distinction of being one of the two hymns by American authors to appear in the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern (London, 1861). Based on John 14:6, each of the first three stanzas opens with one of Christ's self-descriptions as "the Way, the Truth, and the Life." The composer of the tune is not certain, but evidence points to Raphael Courteville, organist of the fashionable parish of St. James' Westminster (now called St. James' Piccadilly) from 1691 to 1729. Text from St. John's Gospel is also featured in this morning's anthem God so loved the world (John 3:16,17) by Sir John Stainer. Stainer began his career as a chorister in St. Paul's Cathedral Choir, and since served as organist for Magdalen College Oxford and St. Paul's Cathedral, later becoming professor of music at Oxford University. God so loved the world is a chorus from his oratorio The Crucifixion (1887), his most widely performed major work to this day. |

 Choral Evensong
Please join us this Sunday, April 10, as the Treble Choir and Parish Choir sings Choral Evensong for Lent at 5 p.m. The Office of Evensong is the crown jewel of Anglican liturgy as composers far and wide have written settings of the two prominent canticles, the Magnificat (Song of Mary) and the Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon). This Sunday's service will include music by Tudor composer Orlando Gibbons and 19th century composer Sir John Goss. In addition to the Choir's musical offerings, the Congregation has a prominent role by singing the hymns. Come one and all to be enriched by this timeless contemplative service during the holy 40 days of Lent.

Lenten Wednesday Evenings ~ Hallowed Be Thy Name in Education
Join us on April 13 at 7 p.m. as we continue our Lenten series based on the plaques placed in the bombed-out ruins of Coventry Cathedral. These plaques help us to remember that God reaches out to us in all aspects of our lives and in all vocations. This week Gay Pogue will talk about what God, Adam, Eve, and The Snake have to say about present-day public and private education. To prepare, sharpen your wits and your #2 pencils and read chapters 2 & 3 of Genesis. Then come join in the discussion. Ms. Pogue has not yet decided whether the test will count as a major or minor grade. |
