Elise Johnstone
Assistant Rector Called to Lead Holy Trinity, Georgetown

Many of you heard the news this past Sunday, I wanted to share that while Good Shepherd has been discerning where God is calling the parish in terms of its permanent rector, I too have been discerning where I am called to serve as a priest. I have been called as the Priest in Charge of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Georgetown, Kentucky. My last Sunday at Good Shepherd will be May 8 and I will begin at Holy Trinity on Sunday, June 12.

I have been so blessed to serve with each one of you, as has my family. The nearly six years I have served at Good Shepherd have been so formational for me and it has been my privilege and honor to walk beside you as we have experienced together what it is to be the Body of Christ. Ryan and Walter join me in saying thank you for this wonderful time. I know that God is faithful and God will continue to be with each of you as you continue this journey. This is a truly blessed place.

A few people have asked what the difference is between a rector and a priest in charge. There is one major difference. A priest in charge has all the same canonical authority a rector does and has the same responsibilities over worship, administration, and the buildings under her care. The difference is that I have an agreement that I will serve there for a period of three years. At the end of that three years, if the parish and I discern that I am called to continue as its leader, then I become the rector and I basically have "tenure." If, at the end of that time, the parish or I discern that God is calling me somewhere else, then I may go there.

As the near future unfolds, we will share with you how we can celebrate our time together here at Good Shepherd. Again, thank you for allowing me to be a part of helping to shape this congregation as the Body of Christ. It has been a very humbling experience.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

Collect

Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Music Notes for Sunday
Hymn 645 is one of the most beloved paraphrases of Psalm 23 within the Anglican Communion, and has been in Episcopal hymnals since 1871. The text is a paraphrase by Sir Henry William Baker, first appearing in Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1868. Following the lead of Luther and Watts, Baker introduces New Testament Christianity into the psalm version: the cup becomes the eucharistic chalice, the cross takes it place with the rod and staff, and the pastoral caretaker assumes the role of the "Good Shepherd" as found in John 10:11-18. The tune matched with this text is a traditional Irish melody, collected by George Petri around 1855. Hymn 429, a doxological hymn of praise by Isaac Watts, first appeared for use by Episcopalians in the Hymnal of 1832. It was deleted in the 1892 edition and restored in 1982. The text is a paraphrase of Psalm 146 and the tune is one of the most important and influential of those composed during the earliest period of hymn writing in the 16th century. The tune was likely composed by Matthaus Greiter, Cantor in Strassburg, for his own metrical version of Psalm 119. John Calvin encountered this tune in Strassburg in 1538 and included it within his metrical psalter issued in 1539.  Both the Anthem and psalm chant are the work of Sir John Goss, who was organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in London from 1838-1872. His part writing is always clear and direct, having very few awkward leaps. His anthem O Saviour of the world, with its repetition of text and largely homophonic texture, not only adorns the liturgy with the sublime art of marrying music to text, but becomes somewhat of a litany in and of itself.

Hallowed Be Thy NameLenten Wednesday Evenings ~
Hallowed Be Thy Name in Government
Join us on April 6 at 7 p.m. as we continue our Lenten series based on the plaques placed in the bombed-out ruins of Coventry Cathedral. These plaques help us to remember that God reaches out to us in all aspects of our lives and in all vocations. This week we will have a presentation based on the book Faith and Politics by Senator John Danforth, who is also an Episcopal priest. While our country has as one of its founding principles the separation of church and state, we will be discussing the founding fathers' background for that tenet and how we, as people of faith, can approach our governmental system. Please come for what should be a lively discussion!

What a wonderful way to share in this most joyful celebration of Our Lord's Resurrection in the name of your loved ones! As in the past, the Easter service bulletin will list contributors and their memorial or thanksgiving dedications.

Please fill out a form (located at the back of the church and in the Loggia) and return to the church office with your donation. The deadline for notifying the office is Friday, April 15.

Uganda Mission Trip
Africa Mission Trip Opportunity
Deacon Lauren Villemuer will be taking a group of college age young adults to Uganda July 22 through August 7 to work with a medical mission team at an orphanage. Originally, only four people could go, but now more can be involved.   To go, you must be an active member of Good Shepherd, have completed high school, be at least 18 years of age, and be able to know immediately if you can go. The cost is $3,500 which covers all travel, food, and supply expenses.

In Uganda, the effects of hunger, disease, and extreme poverty are devastating. It is estimated there are 2 million children orphaned because of AIDS in Uganda alone. Embrace Uganda has been working with 1,800 orphans and 27 widows. The Good Shepherd group will also visit Ntinda with Agape Ministries where on any given Saturday some 300 children come and play, most of them orphaned with nowhere else to go. The Agape Children's Village, located in Bukerere, houses 87 orphans and is in the process of building a school. A wide range of activities is planned--healing, helping, loving, feeding, building, teaching, and sharing the love of God.

Contact Deacon Lauren for more information.

Carole Bizzack
In Memory of Carole Bizzack
The Carole P. Bizzack Memorial Foundation is a fitting tribute to a kind, gentle and loving woman who dedicated her life to her animals. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the tragic accident of Comair Flight 5191. In honor of Carole, her family is putting together a fundraiser to help support future students who plan to dedicate their lives to animal science and veterinary medicine. The work of the Carole P. Bizzack Memorial Foundation is only possible with the assistance of donations provided by members of the community.

The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m.        to 6 p.m. at Pro-Matx Health Club on Winchester Road. The Foundation is looking for supporters who would be willing to donate their time and/or services (including gift cards, gift certificates or items for auction) to help raise money for future students. If you would like to advertise for the day and donate a gift certificate we will have tables for $20 dollars. There will be food and music and loads of activities for children as well. Please come and celebrate a great local cause!

Carole was a Good Shepherd member and the wife of John Bizzack.
