From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

Sunday's readings are filled with images of renewal - new birth, new life, new creation.  These images imply that God's promise for new life entails God's gift of a fresh start, freed from the restrictions of our past lives in order to enter a new relationship with God through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Read more.

An invitation to register for the first of four Holy Conversations will arrive in your email box tomorrow. You will be able to register online using a feature in that email. You may also register by completing a form or by calling the parish office.

It is very important that you register!

The Rector Nominating Committee and Diocesan Leadership Team are working diligently to prepare for these evenings.  They have arranged for the gatherings to be held in the parish hall of Second Presbyterian Church in order to accommodate the 200+ participants that are expected each time.  Food will be provided and a sufficient number of tables and chairs need to be set up. Also, a program for children and youth under the age of 16 will be provided at Good Shepherd on each of the evenings. Please participate in this important aspect of the process leading to the call of a new rector.

I'll see you in church!

The Second Sunday in Lent

Collect

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Music Notes for Sunday
For Lent we are using the Mass Ordinary settings by Schubert (9:00 service) and Willan (11:15 service), settings that Episcopal Church parishes and cathedrals have immortalized by consistent use through the years. Schubert's Deutsche Messe lives on due to Richard Proulx's setting of this mass in English, and is now one of the most popular settings used throughout the Episcopal Church. Though only the melody is printed in the bulletin, the congregation is encouraged to sing the harmony parts found at S96, S130, and S164. Healey Willan was an English emigrant to Canada. He was organist of St Mary Magdalene Church in Toronto, a notable Anglo-Catholic church in the Anglican Church of Canada, from 1921 to 1967. Willan's melodic style hearkens back to the ancient Church modes and tend to be stepwise and melismatic (i.e., several notes for one syllable of text, such as in the Kyrie), setting him apart from his fellow post-Romantic composers. Sunday's Anthem is from Handel's oratorio Messiah. Though Handel wrote nearly 30 oratorios, Messiah is the public's enduring favorite. An oratorio, like an opera, is a multi-movement work for chorus, soloists, and instrumentalists. The chief difference between the two genres are subject matter (oratorios tend to be sacred) and performance practice (while operas are "staged" oratorios are not). The text of "Behold the Lamb of God," taken from John and set in the ponderous key of G Minor, commands our attention to Christ as God's Son (Behold!), and assures that our worldly sins will be expunged through him.

Holy Conversations
Holy Conversations
One of the most exciting parts of the process for calling a new rector is an interactive parish self-study known as Holy Conversations. As members of the Church of the Good Shepherd, we are not simply a part of our parish, our diocese, the Episcopal Church, and the world-wide Anglican Communion, we are part of The Greatest Story Ever Told. As people of The Story, we are invited to come together for four conversations, which will be led by the Diocesan Leadership Team. At each "conversation," we are invited to tell our story - how each of us has experienced Good Shepherd and share our wishes, hopes, and dreams for the future into which God is calling us.

Whether you have been at Good Shepherd for a few months or for many years, your part of the story is essential to understanding who we are, what we value, and where we want to go in the future. Please plan now to make a special effort to be a part of each of the four different conversations. Mark your calendars! A light supper will be provided for each session at Second Presbyterian's Parish Hall. In addition, there will be a special program at Good Shepherd for children and youth under age 16 each evening. Transportation assistance is available.

Men's Breakfast
Come to Breakfast

The monthly men's breakfast will be held on Saturday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. in the Undercroft. Sign up in the Loggia on Sunday or call the church office at 252-1744.

Be The ChurchBe the Church
This Sunday we will be holding our annual Be the Church event, spending the afternoon helping at different community organizations. No one is too young or too old to Be the Church. Activities are planned so that even our youngest members can get involved.

Come to worship on Sunday, March 20, but dress for work. After the 11:15 service concludes, everyone will meet for a light lunch in the Undercroft and then be put into groups and given assignments. The group will return to Good Shepherd and end with discussion and evening prayer. Speak to Lauren Villemuer or Lauren Goodpaster if you have any questions.

Hallowed Be Thy NameHallowed Be Thy Name in the Arts
Join us on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. as we continue our Lenten series based on the plaques placed in the bombed-out ruins of Coventry Cathedral. These plaques help us to remember that God reaches out to us in all aspects of our lives and in all vocations. This week, parishioner, professor, and author Kim Edwards will share how her vocation of writing shapes her faith, and how her faith shapes her writing. She will also talk about her newest book, "The Lake of Dreams."  Kim will sign her new book at the end of the class for those who bring copies with them.
A Taste of Italy
Newcomers' Dinner ~ A Taste of Italy
The clergy and staff of Good Shepherd want to welcome newcomers, very new or still feeling new, to a special dinner  at the church on Sunday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. If you would like to learn more about Good Shepherd and about oppor-tunities for spiritual growth, for serving in the church, and for outreach, please come and share with us. RSVP to Joyce Roth or call the parish office at 252-1744. Let us know if you require childcare.

New Playground Equipment
New Playground Equipment Coming
Be looking for changes outside the church windows. On Wednesday, March 23, new playground will be delivered. It will be made of recycled plastic and have no nails or boards or splinters. It will have a "friends" slide, tunnels, climbing walls, store fronts and monkey bars. There will also be swings, balance beams and stepping stones. The design, structures and colors will be in keeping with the historical nature of the church and the neighborhood. Click here to view a diagram of how the playground will look. The Day School is excited about the new structure, and hope you are too.

Before it comes, a major demolition of the old structure will have to take place, so there may be a time when there is nothing there. We will also have to have a dumpster for holding all of the old wood pieces. We ask for your patience as we transition from the old to the new. (That seems to be a theme around here!) The Day School is looking forward to sharing our new playground with the parish.  We hope you enjoy it.

Easter Memorials and ThanksgivingsEaster Flowers
During Lent we have the opportunity to contribute towards the flowers and music that add so much to our Easter services. What a wonderful way to share in this most joyful celebration of Our Lord's Resurrection in the name of your loved ones! As in the past, the Easter service bulletin will list contributors and their memorial or thanksgiving dedications.

Please fill out a form (located at the back of the church and in the Loggia) and return to the church office with your donation. The deadline for notifying the office is Friday, April 15.
