From the Interim Rector Dear ,
The Transfiguration is a story about transition. Anytime we see in a new light, something within us changes. We, too, need those epiphanies when God helps us to see people, places, events, and circumstances in a new light. Read more.
I'll see you in church!

Music Notes for Sunday The Last Sunday after the Epiphany is the last day the word "alleluia" may be uttered until its return as the Great Alleluia at the Easter Vigil. Therefore, much of today's music includes this word of exuberance, which has its roots in Judaism. The Hebrew expression "hallelujah" is the merging of the two Hebrew words hellel (to praise) and yah (the Lord, Yahweh, Jehovah) to form the meaning "praise we the Lord." "Alleluia" is simply the Latin spelling of this word with the same meaning. Hymn 618 is one of our most beloved hymns containing an alleluia refrain. The text was written for use with this tune in The Hymnal 1916. The popularity of the tune is attributed to Ralph Vaughan Williams, editor of the English Hymnal, though its origins date from around 1525. The Anthem also features the word "alleluia," which features irregular meters, plentiful parallel motion in the organ part. John Weaver, one of the America's finest concert organists, was Director of Music at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1970 to 2005. He was Head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1972 to 2003, and also Chair of the Organ Department at The Juilliard School from 1987 to 2004. He currently lives in Vermont and continues to concertize and lead workshops and master classes around the world. Today is also the last Sunday we have to enjoy organ voluntaries until Easter. Charles-Marie Widor, who was "provisional organist" at St. Sulpice in Paris for a remarkable 64 years, wrote ten symphonies with the symphonic nature of Cavaillé-Coll organs in mind. It's a little difficult to imagine the sound of a Cavaillé-Coll organ when hearing our neo-Baroque instrument in Good Shepherd with its plentiful upperwork and minimal fundamental sound, but certain subtleties of Widor's genius are clearly audible, particularly his demanding pedal parts and precisely notated articulation (i.e., the space between the notes). |

Wilson Eastland, Lauren Goodpaster, Barbara Groves, Lee Jenkins, Sarah Leer, Aaron Rodocker, Winn Stephens, George VanMeter and David Young are about to begin guiding the parish through a prayerful and collaborative process of discernment. They will be commissioned for their work at the 9 a.m. service this Sunday, March 6. Take advantage of every opportunity to express your support in word and action to the members of this committee and their loved ones.
You are encouraged to attend Holy Conversations from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 24, 31, April 11, 14. A light supper will be provided. Because over 200 parishioners are expected to attend each of the four Holy Conversations, arrangements have been made to use the parish hall of Second Presbyterian Church. There will also be a special program at Good Shepherd for children and youth up to age 15 so their voices can be heard. Due to food allergies and restrictions, children and youth will need to bring their own brown bag meal.
Show the Nominating Committee members how important this process and their commitment is to you by your personal commitment. The committee needs to hear what is in your heart and on your mind. The process won't be complete without you. |
