Christmas Offering for Darfur School Project
 | | Darfur School Video |
In 2003, a horrible genocide started in Darfur. Because of the color of their skin, no one was safe from being ripped from their home and being brutally murdered. Children have suffered the most. Almost eight years later, the war still continues. Anyone under the age of 9 who is still alive has never known a home without fear, loss, and horrors that we will never have to face.
Last year, Good Shepherd Youth led us to begin a project to build an elementary school in the Djabal Refugee Camp in Chad. There are 632 elementary aged children living in this camp without a school, without electricity, and without hope. We are $3,000 short of our goal for building the school. This school will give the children something to do during the day besides hate. It will educate the children so they can have a future. It will bring hope.
This Christmas, we ask you to consider making a special Christmas offering to our Darfur School project. Any money raised in excess of the amount needed for the school will be used for school furnishings and books. The school will be built in conjunction with the UN. |
Come to our Christmas Pageant Sing carols and see the Christmas story come to life as told by our children on Sunday, January 2 at the 11:15 a.m. service. Children and youth of all ages are encouraged to participate and need to arrive at 10 a.m. to prepare for the pageant. Adults are also needed to help by sitting with the children and reminding them of cues. No one is too young or too old to be in the cast. A party in the Undercroft follows the 11:15 service. |
The Discovery Series: A Christian Journey
The Discovery Series: A Christian Journey is an opportunity for those who are exploring their faith and their relationship with the Episcopal Church. If you or someone you know are interested in becoming a member, renewing their membership, or just learning more, consider our upcoming 12-week series beginning on February 13. Sessions will be held on Sunday mornings from 10:15-11:00 in the Undercroft. Our clergy and a team of laity will lead the series, which involves video presentations, talks, and group discussion. Those who complete the series may be presented to the Bishop when he visits Good Shepherd on May 15.
Watch this Introductory Video.
The video series is much like a History Channel or A&E cable television format with video footage and voice over. It is designed to help every Christian - new or lifelong, young or old - discover their own path to a life in Christ.
Like our lives, careers and relationships, our spiritual growth is also a journey. This series is intended to help everyone forge a lifelong relationship with God.
The series addresses the spiritual life stage of virtually everyone - from the beginner to those seeking more advanced levels of knowledge. It takes a basic look at our faith and the history and beliefs that bring us together as Christians. It is an invitation to spiritual growth and lays the groundwork to begin or continue a spiritual journey. Here's what we'll cover:
The Path to Episcopal Worship includes an instructed Eucharist, a history of the Episcopal Church and information about the Church's traditions and governance.
A Journey of Faith includes basic information about the Bible, the Trinity, the Kingdom of God, who Jesus is, the Creeds and Baptism.
A Path to Spiritual Maturity includes an in-depth discussion about the importance of Bible study and different forms of prayer, both personal and corporate.
Our Spiritual Gifts provides a guided tour of assessing spiritual gifts, defining ministers as "all of us" and instilling the importance of personal involvement in ministry, both in and beyond the congregation.
The Great Commission shows how our stories are reflections of ancient stories in the Bible and teaches participants how to share their own stories with friends, neighbors and coworkers, making disciples who make disciples.

Prayer for the Election of a Rector
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Engaged to be Married? Expecting a Baby? Entering Military Service? How About the House? When you are readying yourself for a change in life such as preparation for marriage or anticipating the arrival of a new child, there are practical preparations that take place, but much of what is happening is hard to define.
The Church has been available to communicate God's blessing at times of major transition, like a baptism, a marriage, and a burial, and now the church is available to communicate God's blessing as a couple is preparing to be married as well as when a family is preparing to welcome a child into the world. We will use a set of supplemental rites published by The Episcopal Church when we honor a betrothal or a pregnancy.
We also have a new rite for entering military service or deployment.
Also consider this: our homes are where we spend a great deal of time. Since it is the place where we base our lives in so many ways, why not affirm God's presence in your home by having a house blessing? House blessings have taken place for many, many years and they are a wonderful way to celebrate that a home is where God is.
If you feel called to have the Church join you in honoring any times of transition in your life and that of your family, please contact Father Ron or Mother Elise! |
Planning for Bad Weather If you are concerned about cancellation of church activities due to weather conditions, please check the local media and the church voice mail for the latest information. Generally speaking, church services (including Christian Formation) will not be cancelled. However, auxiliary activities may be cancelled when the weather is bad. |
