Christmas Offering for Darfur School Project
Darfur School Children
Dafur School Video
In 2003, a horrible genocide started in Darfur. Because of the color of their skin, no one was safe from being ripped from their home and being brutally murdered. Children have suffered the most. Almost eight years later, the war still continues. Anyone under the age of 9 who is still alive has never known a home without fear, loss, and horrors that we will never have to face.

Last year, Good Shepherd Youth led us to begin a project to build an elementary school in the Djabal Refugee Camp in Chad. There are 632 elementary aged children living in this camp without a school, without electricity, and without hope. We are $3,000 short of our goal for building the school. This school will give the children something to do during the day besides hate. It will educate the children so they can have a future. It will bring hope.

This Christmas, we ask you to consider making a special Christmas offering to our Darfur School project. Any money raised in excess of the amount needed for the school will be used for school furnishings and books. The school will be built in conjunction with the UN.
Christmas Pageant Cartoon
Come to our Christmas Pageant
Sing carols and see the Christmas story come to life as told by our children on Sunday, January 2 at the 11:15 a.m. service. Children and youth of all ages are encouraged to participate and need to arrive at 10 a.m. to prepare for the pageant. Adults are also needed to help by sitting with the children and reminding them of cues.  No one is too young or too old to be in the cast. A party in the Undercroft follows the 11:15 service.
Discovery Series Banner
The Discovery Series: A Christian Journey
The Discovery Series: A Christian Journey is an opportunity for those who are exploring their faith and their relationship with the Episcopal Church.  If you or someone you know are interested in becoming a member, renewing their membership, or just learning more, consider our upcoming 12-week series beginning on February 13.  Sessions will be held on Sunday mornings from 10:15-11:00 in the Undercroft.  Our clergy and a team of laity will lead the series, which involves video presentations, talks, and group discussion.  Those who complete the series may be presented to the Bishop when he visits Good Shepherd on May 15.

Watch this Introductory Video.

The video series is much like a History Channel or A&E cable television format with video footage and voice over.  It is designed to help every Christian - new or lifelong, young or old - discover their own path to a life in Christ.

Like our lives, careers and relationships, our spiritual growth is also a journey. This series is intended to help everyone forge a lifelong relationship with God.

The series addresses the spiritual life stage of virtually everyone - from the beginner to those seeking more advanced levels of knowledge. It takes a basic look at our faith and the history and beliefs that bring us together as Christians. It is an invitation to spiritual growth and lays the groundwork to begin or continue a spiritual journey.  Here's what we'll cover:

The Path to Episcopal Worship includes an instructed Eucharist, a history of the Episcopal Church and information about the Church's traditions and governance.

A Journey of Faith includes basic information about the Bible, the Trinity, the Kingdom of God, who Jesus is, the Creeds and Baptism.

A Path to Spiritual Maturity includes an in-depth discussion about the importance of Bible study and different forms of prayer, both personal and corporate.

Our Spiritual Gifts provides a guided tour of assessing spiritual gifts, defining ministers as "all of us" and instilling the importance of personal involvement in ministry, both in and beyond the congregation.

The Great Commission shows how our stories are reflections of ancient stories in the Bible and teaches participants how to share their own stories with friends, neighbors and coworkers, making disciples who make disciples.

Sorrow in Our Parish Family

Sophie Kephart, wife of Bill Kephart, died on December 19.
Her funeral was at the Milward Funeral Home on December 22, with interment in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Let us pray.

For Sophie
O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of your servant Sophie, and grant her an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

For Those Who Mourn

Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with Bill and all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vestry 2010
Highlights of the Vestry Meeting
December 14
The last meeting of the 2010 Vestry was a very productive one.

· Jack Brown was elected to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Joseph Jacobs due to health.
· An Organ Committee was appointed to work with John Linker to assess the condition of our pipe organ, explore options, and report back with a recommendation by March 15. The committee members are: Schuyler Robinson, George Zack, John Bloomfield, David Goodpaster, Dorothy VanMeter, Joe Jones, Mary Campbell and Lee Jenkins.
· Adopted a Budget of $1,017,000 for 2011.  Some of the major changes in this year's budget include $10,000 for Outreach (nothing was budgeted in 2010), a 5% increase in staff salaries (which haven't been increased in the last two budgets) and $2,500 to cover the cost of leasing new computer equipment to replace our antiquated 5-year-old computer system.  Some measures taken to achieve a balanced budget include a hiring freeze and removing budgeted bonuses for staff.
· Recommended Karen Workman Booth for ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons.
· Thanked those members of the Vestry who are rotating off after serving three years: Barbara Groves, Lee Jenkins, Liz Hinz, Ed Tipton, and Laura Lipka.

Following the adjournment of the 2010 Vestry, the 2011 Vestry convened briefly.

· Elected Officers: Senior Warden, Kathy Gross (confirmed her appointment by the Interim Rector); Junior Warden, Guy Huguelet; Clerk, Elizabeth Leppman; Treasurer, Barbara Baldwin; Chancellor, Guy Graves.
· Adopted a Banking Resolution authorizing signatories on parish accounts effective January 1.
· Reviewed January dates for meeting with the Bishop and Transition Officer to review the process of selecting a Rector Nominating Committee.

Changes Rites of Passage
Engaged to be Married?
     Expecting a Baby?
          Entering Military Service?
               How About the House?

When you are readying yourself for a change in life such as preparation for marriage or anticipating the arrival of a new child, there are practical preparations that take place, but much of what is happening is hard to define.

The Church has been available to communicate God's blessing at times of major transition, like a baptism, a marriage, and a burial, and now the church is available to communicate God's blessing as a couple is preparing to be married as well as when a family is preparing to welcome a child into the world. We will use a set of supplemental rites published by The Episcopal Church when we honor a betrothal or a pregnancy.

We also have a new rite for entering military service or deployment.

Also consider this: our homes are where we spend a great deal of time. Since it is the place where we base our lives in so many ways, why not affirm God's presence in your home by having a house blessing? House blessings have taken place for many, many years and they are a wonderful way to celebrate that a home is where God is.

If you feel called to have the Church join you in honoring any times of transition in your life and that of your family, please contact Father Ron or Mother Elise!

Planning for Bad Weather
If you are concerned about cancellation of church activities due to weather conditions, please check the local media and the church voice mail for the latest information.
