Traffic Cop

Remember the movie Flashdance from the early 80s? You know, the one with the female welder who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.

There's one scene that really stood out-and, surprisingly, it didn't involve Jennifer Beals dancing. No, the scene I'm talking about is a real-life cop (His name is Vic Cianco; I looked him up) directing traffic in downtown Pittsburgh.

He's in the middle of the intersection, dramatically gesturing, waving, bowing, even pleading as he keeps traffic moving. He acts like he's sleeping when drivers take too long to move. Sometimes he uses just his arms to direct traffic, other times he points the way with a leg, too. It's like a graceful dance, which is why a local columnist called him "the Nureyev of the Intersection." He's totally into what he's doing, and everyone who passes by loves it. In the movie, Beals' character even incorporates the cop's moves into her dance routine.

To me that scene was all about passion. Most of us have a passion for something, whether it's music, sports, art, gardening or collecting stamps. But passionate about directing traffic? I may be wrong but I don't think traffic cop is the highest ranking job in the department, and it certainly isn't the kind of assignment that inspires TV shows.

So why did Vic Cianco bring such passion to his job? Was he just naturally excited about directing traffic? Every job matters, after all, and it's important to make sure cars don't run into each other. But I wonder if his passion had less to do with what he did for a living than with who he chose to be. I think he was passionate about directing traffic because he was passionate about his life.

And that's a good lesson for all of us. Too often...

The Best Cities for Finding Employment

By Jacquelyn Smith - From Campus to Career

With the employment picture still bleak in some major metropolitan areas, job seekers might be tempted to run off to the cities with the healthiest employment numbers-but low unemployment doesn't always mean it's the best place for finding a job.

While cities with low unemployment might be the easiest areas for some to land a job, there may be little diversity in the industries hiring, the cost of living can be high, and the required skill sets can be too specific.

The recruiting firm Ajilon Professional Staffing looked at the U.S. cities with the fullest employment, according to the Department of Labor, and then determined which areas are the best for finding a job. The ranking reflects considerations such as: Read more...
