November 2011/Issue 4

Dear MAAA News Readers,

Each November MAAA honors family caregivers by devoting our newsletter to the topic of caregiving.  This edition features promising new efforts to reach caregivers and highlights research that helps us gain insight into their lives.

During this time of reflection and thanksgiving, reach out to your family members and the friends and neighbors who care for others.  Offer a warm meal, finish up the fall lawn chores, walk the dog or lend a supportive ear.  And finally, encourage caregivers to seek consultation and support.   You'll find a listing of MAAA's service provider partners in this edition of MAAA News.

 Sincerely,

Dawn Simonson

Supports for Family Caregivers
long-recognized  challenge in getting caregivers to utilize the supports that are available to them is:  caregivers do not recognize themselves in this role!

To address this,  MAAA staff had the opportunity to serve on workgroups for both Wilder Foundation and Hennepin County to develop a caregiver awareness campaign and gallery exhibit.  The goal of both projects is to increase caregiver identification with the hope that it will lead caregivers to seek services that  support their unique needs.  Find out more by visiting the Wilder Foundation's "Capacity to Care"  and the Hennepin County Gallery Exhibit "Start Seeing Caregivers."

New Web-Based Support for Caregivers

While family caregiving is timeless, easy access to research and practice information is relatively recent - less than two decades.  Are you looking for resources to improve service development and delivery?  Explore four new resources that focus on working caregivers, veterans, Alzheimer's disease and respite care practice guidelines.

The Cost of Caregiving in Minnesota
Sheryl, age 61, describes her 10 years of full-time caregiving for both her parents. She left a six-figure job and encountered her own health problems.  She then discovered they have  "just enough money to qualify for nothing."

Now is the time to learn about the One Away Campaign for Elder Economic Security at http://www.onewaway.org/In-Your-State/Minnesota/Cost-of-Caregiving.
Attention Veteran Caregivers!
The Veterans Administration is acknowledging the sacrifice that family members and friends make to care for Veterans of all eras.  This has included adding 9/11 family member caregiver enhancements in May 2011.

In recognition of the important role that caregivers have for veterans, the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) conducted a study to better understand this unique caregiver group.

Expand your awareness of Veterans by visiting the  VA Services for Veterans' Caregivers announcement and the NAC Study findings.

MAAA Hosts Metro State U Intern

This past summer, Caron Menard, a Metropolitan State University graduate student, brought her knowledge and experience as a nurse gerontologist, case manager and substance abuse counselor to MAAA as an intern.  Ms. Menard's internship project focused on the barriers and supports involved in independent living for older adults.
