DSC in the News!
Here's a note from our 2007 evaluation of our Sailing Instructor in Training, Crystal Gibbs:
"Learned to sail at the DSC in 2006 through the SIT program. She is currently a Junior at Digital Harbor High School. She is showing an increasing interest and ability in learning to sail."
Slow forward five years later (we're sailors after all!) ...Crystal has graduated from high school, and is now teaching sailing to individuals (take a look as Ava Marie at WBAL TV weather learns!) and groups at the DSC. She is also assisting DSC Waterfront & Facilities Manager, Stuart Proctor, in maintaining our fleet of boats!
Crystal is now completing her application to join the United States Air Force. The sky's the limit, shoot for the stars, and up up and away, Crystal! |

August DSC Open House
~ Saturday, August 18, 2012
10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
This is a chance to try out sailing for free! Come check out all the DSC has to offer. Invite your friends, family, and colleagues to attend our Open House event. Guests will enjoy a 25-minute sail, and will learn about membership, classes, and more. Please click here to register for each guest attending the Open House. Advanced registration is very helpful to us as we coordinate boats and crew. (We are looking good with Skippers who have stepped up to run the boat rides - Thanks! Still seeking a couple of "Shore Support" Volunteers for the event. If you have an hour or two and wish to help, you may also register using the link. As always, we're very grateful for any and all assistance!) |

DSC Sailing Quiz
From our last DSC Sailing Quiz:
QUESTION: Stun Sail - And for extra credit what's a Stun Sail Tack Bend?
ANSWER: Stunsails were used on the outside of each side of a square sail in very light winds to provide a 'spinnaker like' downwind or broad reaching push - They were not often used because as soon as the wind piped up it was "All Hands on Deck!" and into the rigging...
Stunsail Tack Bend: Makes the loop in the end of a line which will slip closed, making a neat, tight knot. Great for jib sheet clews!

DSC Parking Lot Access & Reminders
Reminders about parking for DSC Members - your cooperation is very much appreciated:
- Seek parking on the gravel area near the docks. If no parking is available in that area, limited blacktop parking can be utilized, keeping as close to the docks as possible.
- The "Entrance" Gate is solely for the purpose of vehicular traffic entering the BMI/DSC parking lot. Do not use this as a vehicle exit from the property at any time unless the "Exit" gate is locked. The "Exit" Gate should be utilized to leave the property. (This applies to moving vehicles only, not pedestrian or bicycle traffic.)
- Skippers and Dock Masters performing end of day "securing the property" duties as the last remaining members on site will be required to close and lock both the Entrance and Exit Gates in the future.
- Please drive slowly and keep watch for pedestrians, especially children, and also wildlife in the parking area.
