Trivia!

Send in your answers to Grady and receive a free DSC T-Shirt for being the first to answer correctly.

According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's 2008 State of the Bay Report, the Bay's health rates a _?_ out of 100 (A score of 100 represents a "pristine" Bay circa. 1600). At its worst in the early 1980s, the Bay would have scored a 23. A "saved Bay" would score a 70.

Damage Line Changes

Have you called the office lately? If you have you may have noticed that we have a new phone system. For the winter months this system will allow you to access any of the full time staff (Lynn, Grady, Sean and kb) directly. We have also moved the boat discrepancy and damage line.

Now you only need to know one number (410-727-0722) to find out more about the organization, get answers from the staff or report boat damage. Anytime you find something missing or need to report damage to your vessel, please call and leave a message with clear description of the issue.

The number to call if you have damage to report is 410-727-0722 - and to get to the boat discrepancy and damage mailbox press 5 at anytime.

Day Fleet Boat Managers

As the summer season comes to a close, and winter creeps up on us, it is time to think about winter maintenance. Traditionally we have pulled the entire fleet out of the water in November and re-launched them in the spring. As we are planning on sailing year round, and having a frostbite racing series, we are only going to pull the boats out 2 at a time on a rotating maintenance schedule.

A lot of the boats have specific needs, and the best people to work on the boats are the people sailing them! We are instating a Volunteer Boat Manager program, similar to the Cruising Boat Manager program. Having a Volunteer Boat Manager assigned to each boat will make sure that all the projects are on track and repairs done before the following season and throughout the year.

If you are interested in being a Volunteer Boat Manager, please contact Waterfront Manager Sean Beale-Rosano. Once all submissions are in, assignments will be made the first week of November with the hope of having the first meeting/work party in mid-November.

Please see the blog for a more detailed description of what the Volunteer Boat Manager will be doing.

Halloween On The Harbor Camp

Do your kids have Monday, October 31 off of school?  If so, join the Downtown Sailing Center to celebrate Halloween on the Harbor; our first annual Halloween mini sailing camp.

The day will include decorating the boats for Halloween, and learning the haunted history of the Baltimore neighborhoods while sailing around the harbor.

Accessible Sailor Receives Award

Santa Wallace is one of the DSC's regular accessible sailors. Last week she was named the Education Advocate of the Year by the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities. Check out the blog to read her beautiful speech discussing the realities of living with and without a disability.

The DSC is proud to have Santa has one of our members because she illustrates courage and perseverance each and every day.

2011 Frostbite Racing

Join us for the 2011 Frostbite sailing season. Frostbite sailing will take place November 12th, November 26th, and December 10th.

Each week there will be a chalk talk before sailing and a debrief of the day's racing to follow. On the water, sailors of all types will participate in sailing drills and fun racing to hone sailing skills and have a fun time on the water!

Following racing we will head to a favorite watering hole to warm up and host a de-brief of the afternoon's sailing.

Sailors of all skill level are welcome and new racers are strongly encouraged to join.

DSC Featured on Hit ABC Show!

The Downtown Sailing Center was featured last Friday night on Extreme Home Makeover. The show is focused on Brian Keefer, a Kennedy Krieger patient, who had the opportunity to sail the sip and puff system this summer. Brian is truly an inspiration and it was an honor to have him on the water at the Downtown Sailing Center.

Check out the clip here. The DSC section is about 12:00 minutes into the second part of the show. Thanks to everyone who helped make that and every accessible event a success!
