Sail For Kids Wrap Up

July 26, 2011 - This past weekend nearly 100 members and supporters of the Downtown Sailing Center came together to make the 4th Annual Sail For Kids Regatta and Fundraiser a huge success. By the start of Sunday's awards dinner more than 40 DSC "fund racers" had raised $27,445 from 253 individuals and corporate sponsors! The money raised by this event goes directly to helping the Downtown Sailing Center reach more than 1000 Baltimore area youth through our Sailing Instructor Trainee (S.I.T.), KidsSail, SuperKids and Freedom Camp programs .

Saturday was punctuated by variable winds and hot temperatures. The one design racers (J/22 and Sonar) were able to get in three races in the waters off of Fort McHenry and in the Canton Basin.

The cruising racers were stymied by fickle winds on the final leg of their 11 mile pursuit course and ended the day in a four-way tie for first. Sweaty brows and intense concentration gave way to cool drinks and tasty eats as the racers mingled and shared stories at the Little Havana after party.

Sunday saw a solid 7-12 kts of wind and cooler temps, which made for hotter racing. The one design course quickly knocked off 6 races while the cruisers went back to work sailing off the dock "le mans" style, reaching out to Fort Carroll and beating their way back to the DSC. Upon arriving home the party volunteers had snacks, cold drinks and live music waiting for the participants.

Congratulations to the top 16 individual "fund racers" who are invited to sail the historic Sandbaggers Bear and Bull in Annapolis. The top individual "fund racer" was Brian Knauff who successfully raised more than $2800 and helped Team Airwaves carry the team fundraising division as well with more than $3100 dollars raised.

Special Thank You!

Dear Fundraisers!

Thank you so much for the wonderful event this year! I cannot thank you enough for making our outreach events possible. I cannot express how much it meant it to me when we raised more than our original goal of $20,000 goal; it showes how much you believe in our outreach.

In case you didn't hear we had over 200 people at the sailing center on Monday. One group that attended on Monday is the Casey Cares Foundation . This foundation is focused on providing activities for families with critically ill children. This Monday was a HUGE success with over ten families heading out on the water with the DSC. The parents were so thrilled with their experiences they emailed us with thank you notes! Here is one example.

"Thank you so much for the sailing and pirate adventures you sponsored today... Olivia and Seiler had a great time sailing... Thanks again for a wonderful time! We are so very thankful for organizations like you who support kids with cancer."

I also wanted to provide you some images that should help explain how the money you raised has directly impacted so many people.

Jeremy Sailing

This is Jeremy sailing during one of our League sails. He is an absolutely amazing person. He has no mobility but has the most beautiful heart and soul. If you have yet to meet him you should come down to one of our accessible sails; he's here every week!

S.I.T.'s in DC

A very excited family from the Casey Cares Foundation!

Thank you again for making all this possible. If you ever want to hear some more stories about your impact come and find me!

Sincerely,

Open Sails Need Dockmasters!

Wednesday and Sunday member open sails are one of the most popular events at the DSC. If you have attended one before you will know that you are greeted by some of our SUPER volunteers called Dock Masters.

In order to ensure that our open sails are as successful as possible we need a deep pool of Dock master volunteers.

If you are interested in becoming a Dock master please email Grady.
