Tip of the Week

This week we are starting a new segment in the weekly newsletter - the tips and tricks section! Got a hot tip, send it to Grady.

You can adjust the amount of power your sails generate by changing the amount and location of the draft, the amount of twist and the angle of attack of your sails.

Deep sails (more draft) generate more power. But, more power is not always better - especially in big breeze.

You can reduce the draft of your sails - or flatten them - by applying tension to the  halyard, outhaul, backstay, Cunningham and moving the jib lead car blocks aft.

Light air evening? Ease your draft controls and move your jib lead car blocks forward to power up!

Dock Upgrades!

If you have been down to the docks at the DSX recently you have seen some new docks and equipment upgrades.  This is the start of a DSC facility makeover!  Lead by Board of Directors Vice President, Doug Silber, these enhancements benefit all aspects of the Downtown Sailing Center.  Here are the basics of what has already been done:

Accessible Platform:  The new platforms located at the "T-head," combine the concrete and wood platforms and measure an impressive 2500 square feet of space to hold accessible sailing programs. It will boast a future capacity of four access dinghy spaces, four hoists and storage for boats and transfer gear!

The plan calls for some fit and finish details that will require some serious volunteer man hours.  Please contact Grady if you are interested in putting your carpentry and maintenance skills to work!

WOOD FINGER PIERS:  Those old wooden docks, original to the DSC, are now resting in peace in a landfill.  Taking their place are beautiful new docks that can handle six power powerboats instead of five and can accomodate more than four day sailors and two cruising boats.  A HUGE gain of space and functionality for the DSC.

Swim Ladders:  Six new emergency swim ladders are being installed at various locations around A Dock.  We really hope no one has to use them, but they dramatically improve the safety of our facility.

There are a number of other projects in the works that not only require volunteer help, but funding as well.  We look forward to working with the entire membership in the future to complete these enhancements to better serve the membership and the community!

Accessible Sailing

Last week was another great week for accessible sailing programs.  We had a Fort McHenry sail on Monday night, special needs training on Wednesday and another successful Saturday Access-Ability sail.

Wednesday's training was a truly great way for volunteers to learn the ins and outs of working with people who have special needs.

Interested in volunteering?  Special Olympics will be coming to the sailing center starting this Thursday.  If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Lynn Handy, outreach manager.
