Trivia!

Send in your answers to Grady and receive a free DSC T-Shirt for being the first to answer correctly. As always, check our Facebook page for the answer once the correct answer has been received.

If all of the salt content of the sea was extracted, to what depth would that salt cover the continents of the world?

Last weeks question was:

What is the origin of the term "Shake-a-leg"?

Answer:

The term "Shake A Leg" originated in Portsmouth, where women would come aboard naval vessels to aid ship morale. Each morning the petty officer would shout for the occupants of hammocks to shake a leg. If the leg was smooth and shapely, the occupant was allowed to sleep in; if the leg was hairy, the officer turned out the hammock for the sailor to swab the deck.

Access-Amazing!

This past Saturday's Access-Ability sailing event had the largest number of participants the program has ever seen this year! It would not have been possible without the amazing volunteer turn out and support. Nearly 20 participants used our new accessible platform located at the end of the "A" dock. We had participants on Sonars, Access Dinghies and even a cruiser! The day was a perfect example of how the Downtown Sailing Center is a unique and special organization.

Steve Gross, accessible sailing founder, perfectly captured last Saturdays event in his recent email to some of the staff. Please check out what Steve had to say on the blog.

Jill Myers also took some amazing photographs at our first event on the new docks. Check them out here.

Next Monday night is the access dinghy sail to Ft. McHenry. (there are some spots left) We need a few volunteers willing to ride in the safety boat to help one of the neatest accessible events of the season. We will also have a training session next Wednesday evening that will be an open forum about working with participants with special needs. If you are interested in either event please register online!

Volunteers!  Volunteers!

Have seen an Access Dinghy really shine? Well, Waterfront Manager Sean Beale-Rosano is on a mission. Sean wants the Access Dinghies to be in better shape than ever and he needs your help.

For the rest of this week Sean and crew will be working hard to replace the rub rails, compound and wax the hulls, and get the joysticks and steering controls perfected!

If you are interested in helping Sean out email him or call the office!

Campus Policy Reminder

With more and more members sailing, this is a good time to remind everyone of some of the rules and guidelines that govern all of us at the Downtown Sailing Center.

Parking
KB Yelling
KB the Cop!

Please park in the gravel lot.

Please park on the street during RED FLAG days.  Red flag days are posted on the DSC calendar (the next one is June 9.)

Drive slowly and carefully around the parking lot.  Youth and community outreach programs have already begun.

After sailing, please move your car to the street.  If you are going to enjoy after-sailing refreshments at a local establishment, please move your car to the street.

The parking lot curfew is 10:00 P.M.  All cars MUST be out of the lot by 10:00 P.M.

Pavilion

The Baltimore Museum of Industry rents the pavilion for museum events and private parties.  If there is an event taking place under the pavilion, please avoid the ENTIRE pavilion. This includes the Saturday farmers market.

Year after year this is a point of contention between the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the Downtown Sailing Center.  We rely on your respectful use of the facility to maintain our relationship with the BMI.

Bikes

We love it when people ride their bikes to the Downtown Sailing Center. It is just as green as sailing! Please note though, that bikes are not allowed in the pavilion and are to be locked up at the bike rack by the museum building entrance.

Alcohol

Alcohol is prohibited on Downtown Sailing Center boats and docks.

Alcohol is prohibited on the BMI campus, except during sanctioned events such as end of series parties and monthly Friday socials.

Dogs

While the campus of the Baltimore Museum of Industry is dog friendly, all dogs must be on a leash while on campus. Also, please promptly clean up any dog waste.

PFD's

PFD's must be worn at all times when on DSC boats and docks, except between June 1 and October 31.  Even though it may be hot outside, you are STRONGLY encouraged to wear a PFD at all times.

Thank you for you adherence to these rules and guidelines. If you have questions about campus rules, please contact Grady Byus.
