Cruisers U. Re-Cap

The Downtown Sailing Center wrapped up the Cruiser's University boat show with a bang this past Sunday.  While attendance was a little down, the DSC had a great show.  With several new members joining, dozens of people sailing and great opportunities opening with partners from the boat show - we can say it was a success!

We couldn't have done it without the help of some very hard working and special volunteers.

Thank you to Nolan North, Kathy Buckley, Michael Brennan, John King, Erin Jones, Barbara Keegan and Peggy Clark for their hours of effort supporting the boat show and the sailing center.

Thank you to Ed Duggan and board member Lisa Berringer for supporting our free access dinghy sailing.

Thank you to board member Bruce Levy for creating and staffing the Downtown Sailing Center booth.

Thank you to Rena Kazmierski and board member Trevor Smith for four long days as Best and Final and DSC ambassadors.

In addition to these great volunteers those volunteers who helped get Best and Final ready for the show deserve a hearty thanks and a round of applause for their work!  While not the newest boat at the show she certainly drew lots of attention and plenty of praise.

Well done team!

It's Back!  Sail For Kids 2011

This week the Downtown Sailing Center is announcing the return of the Annual Sail For Kids Regatta and Fundraising.

This year's event will be a two day regatta, open to all DSC members and held July 23 and 24, 2011. Following each not of racing will be fun social events, with a post race party on Saturday and family friendly summertime bar-b-que and awards celebration on Sunday.

With simple online tools, anyone who wants to support the Downtown Sailing Center's youth and community outreach programs can raise funds and participate.  Racing teams will be able to race not only on the water, but off as well.  Prizes and recognition will be awarded to those individuals and teams that raise the most funds as well as for those who get the most individuals to donate.

There will be multiple classes for dinghies, day sailing keelboats with spinnakers, day sailing keelboats non-spin, and a cruisers.  No racing experience is required to participate and we have set a goal of having every available DSC boat racing!

Stay tuned this week to the DSC blog for more information on how to participate and volunteer and for the launch of the Sail For Kids web page and fundraising site.

SUNDAY OPEN SAIL SKIPPER NEEDED!

This Sunday's Open Sail is in need of skippers.  With beautiful weather and nearly a dozen crew-members already registered, skippers are needed to make the day a success.  Sunday's open sail begins at 12:00.  Online registration is available for the event!

Accessible Sailing

Last week the League for People with Disabilities had another great night on the water. One of the returning participants, who can be apprehensive, stayed out for the ENTIRE time. His father was so excited and it was a moment that illustrated why these programs truly change and enhance our participants and their families lives.

The rain did not cooperate this week so our make-up date for the League is next Tuesday the 24th. It will be a full event with all 10 Access Dinghies going out.

Since this was just rescheduled we are definitely in need of some volunteers.  We need three people to be sailing buddies, two people for transfers and a greeter. If you are only available for a short time that is not a problem since we are in need of people to rig boats at 4:00 P.M. or help de-rigging starting at 6:30 P.M.

This Thursday is our volunteer training and orientation on our access dinghies. It is a great opportunity to become comfortable sailing the dinghies and to learn some coaching techniques.  You can actually register for the event in two places our accessible calendar or the main event calendar.

We have our second May access-ability sail on Saturday and we are already packed with participants. If you are interested in being a sailing buddy, greeter or transfer aid, please register.

This spring has been truly preparing us for a great summer! I just want to say thanks again to everyone who has volunteered so far this year. You have truly been an inspiration and I look forward to more great events.
