Fleet Fund Appeal
If you've been sailing with us recently you make have noticed that our fleet is in need of new fenders. Fenders are part of the frontline defense against damage to our fleet of day sailing and cruising boats that are critical to making sailing safe and enjoyable for everyone. DSC co-founder and board member Doug Silber has made a generous gift in the form of a challenge grant to the Downtown Sailing Center. He has pledged to match dollar for dollar up to $1000 any donations made to the DSC Fleet and Facility Fund by DSC members and supporters for the next week. The Fleet and Facility Fund is a fund directed at making our fleet of dinghies, day sailing and cruising boats; and our docks and facilities, the best they can be. Your donation to the Fleet and Facility Fund will be dedicated to making our boats and docks safer and better functioning. This is a rare opportunity to double your impact and make a huge difference here at he DSC. With the funds raised over the next 7 days, we will purchase new fenders for our boats, improve our dock lines and build the capacity of our organization. All donations to the Downtown Sailing Center are tax deductible. Help make the DSC a better place by donating today!

Volunteer at Cruisers U!

United States Yacht Shows, Inc., producer of the United States Sail and Powerboat Shows, is launching a new event for aspiring, as well as experienced, cruisers. And the Downtown Sailing Center is a partner organization! The first annual Cruiser's University, May 12-15, will be held at the Baltimore Marine Center at Inner Harbor. The program will provide expert instruction in a wide range of subjects pertinent to long-range cruising. Classes range from general cruising topics, such as crossing the Gulf Stream, Proper Provisioning and Cruising with Children, to master certification courses in diesel maintenance, weather forecasting. As part of our involvement with Cruiser's University we are seeking volunteers to support the event and our involvement. We are seeking at least four volunteers each day, to support the boat demonstrations as dockhands. The demos run from 4:30 - 7:30 Thursday - Saturday. Sunday, the departures could be any time between 1:30 and 4:30. Additionally we will need several volunteer who can assist the Cruiser's University in four hour shifts by supporting staff with changeover of classrooms and presenters - Fri thru Sun. Classroom volunteers will be responsible for some light cleanup, moving some AV equipment, organizing before/after food service and guiding people to correct classrooms. We will need volunteers to support the Access Dinghy free sail area by helping participants in and out of boats and provide them with information about the Downtown Sailing Center. We will also need volunteers to help us operate our shore-side booth. If you can help for some or all of Cruiser's University, please contact Grady ASAP! |

Accessible Dinghy Orientation
Have you sailed an access dinghy? Are you a crew level member who is looking to build some single-handed and "skipper" experience? Looking for a great low hassle way to take a friend for a sail? Well Access Dinghies may be the answer! Access Dinghies are 10' non-capsizable boats that we use for recreational, juniors education and accessible sailing programs. They are colorful, easy to sail and fun! Along with the day sailing and cruising fleet, access dinghies are moving to the reservation system this season. In order to access the system you must completed an access dinghy orientation sometime in the last two seasons. In fact, with changes coming to the location and rigging procedures for access dinghies EVERYONE is encouraged to take the short and free of charge orientation course again. The first Access Dinghy orientation of the 2011 season will be held this Wednesday April 27, 2011 from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Upon completion of the orientation - you are free to keep sailing, so join us tomorrow for a little learning and a lot of fun.
