Search For The DSC

How many times a day do you type a question or topic into your favorite search engine online? The DSC has made an exciting new partnership with GoodSearch, a company that donates money to non-profit organizations every time you search.

When you visit GoodSearch, make the Downtown Sailing Center the organization you GoodSearch for. From there, you can make GoodSearch your default search engine, or even your home page. Just think, every time you search you could be making the DSC money! If you really want to show your support, ask your friends and family to GoodSearch for the DSC!

If you want to help support the DSC but have questions please contact Grady in the office.

Education - CPR and First Aid Classes

Did you know that about 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital, but statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved?

Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim's chances of survival. We should all know how to recognize the signs and provide assistance in the event someone shows symptoms of a cardiac event.

The American Heart Association's CPR and AED learning programs help increase survival rates by training people just like you to respond quickly.  We want the DSC to be not only the best place to go sailing in the area - but the safest. One of the ways in which we are working to make the DSC a better place is by offering our members, volunteers and staff the opportunities to gain important skills.

Please register to join us Thursday, April 28, 2011 for the American Heart Association's First Aid, CPR with AED course.  The course fee, which includes certification, is just $35. By joining us; you can make the DSC a safer place to sail.

Education - US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Course at the DSC

The Downtown Sailing Center will be hosting a US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Course beginning June 11, 2011. The Three Day Instructor Certification Course is an extremely intensive EVALUATION of your ability to teach sailing to the US SAILING Keelboat Certification System Standard.

This standard is the most rigorous in the country and requires practice, study and preparation by even the most gifted and experienced professional instructors. As part of our goal of providing the best education available we are encouraging all DSC instructors or those individuals who are interested in becoming instructors to consider taking this course.

For more information on the course click here. To register for the course, please click here.

Weekend Recap

This past weekend was a busy one here at the Downtown Sailing Center. Saturday, more than 30 volunteers and nearly a dozen participants sailed through the mist in light breezes for the first Access-Ability sailing event of the season. Access-Ability is a volunteer driven event that helps those with physical and cognitive disabilities gain access to the freedom of sailing.

Thanks to the storing support of our accessible volunteers we had a great event - one which will be replicated every other Saturday until September 23, 2011. If you are interested in volunteer to help or would like to learn more - contact Lynn Handy, outreach manager.

Saturday was also the kick off of our regular Open House sails. Open Houses help the DSC serve Baltimore area residents by giving them access to the sport of sailing at no cost.

Thanks to more than a dozen skippers and member-volunteers over 120 individuals were able to experience the sport of sailing. Getting everyone on the water is core to the DSC's mission and a great way to promote all the wonderful opportunities here at the DSC. This Sunday is the second Open House of the season - please join us for another great day on the water.
