Skipper Orientation

If you are a skipper level member for the 2011 season and missed the group orientation, sign up for your on-the-water orientation now! As you probably know, DSC skippers for the 2011 season are asked to either attend the group Skipper Orientation or complete an on-the-water orientation with one of our instructors. In fact, even if you attended the orientation we strongly encourage and welcome you to participate in an on-the-water orientation.

This orientation will be a great opportunity for our members to "shake the rust off" from the cold winter months and get back into the sailing mode! The orientation will last about one hour and cover 2011 skipper policies and procedures, docking, sailing on the different points of sail, person in the water rescue, and lots more!

In order to organize the orientation process, you can now register online. Orientation's will be available all Wednesdays in April starting at 5:30 P.M. and Saturday's starting at 12:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. Register for your orientation here!

As always, If you can't make one of the scheduled dates, please call the office at 410-727-0722 or Grady and we will schedule a time that works for you!

Volunteer

"The Downtown Sailing Center is a volunteer-driven organization that instills confidence, teamwork and a sense of community through educational and recreational sailing programs.  We are committed to providing access to these life enriching programs to everyone in the greater Baltimore area, especially youth and those with disabilities or limited opportunity."

That is our mission and we are going to really make it shine this weekend! We have 15 sailors coming to participate in our Access-Ability Sailing Saturday, and over 60 members of our community coming to sail with us at our Public Open House Saturday afternoon!

VolunteeringIn order to get all of these participants out on the water, we need the help of YOU, our volunteers! Sign up to volunteer at the Access-Ability Saturday or sign up as a skipper or crew to help get folks out on the water at the Open House!

Racing

Boats are splashing, rigs are being stepped, and practice is planned. We can already hear the first gun of the season, are you ready? Skippers, If you have not already done so make sure and take your rules test. A link to the test can be found in the racers forum when you are logged in.

Access-Ability Sailing Saturday

Saturday, April 9, 2011 is the first scheduled Access-Ability Saturday Sail.  With more than a dozen participants already registered, this is going to be a great event.  The Access-Ability program is made possible by the hard work and dedication of DSC volunteers. With such a strong interest in the April 9 event, we need more volunteers to help with rigging our fleet of access dinghies, acting as greeters and helping participants get registered and organized as well as sailing buddies and transfer volunteers.

Please contact Lynn Handy, outreach manager, if you can volunteer or would like to learn more.

Recreational Sailing

They're back! This week marks the very first member open sails of the season! Our first bi-monthly Sunday Open Sail is this weekend, April 10th. Wednesday Open Sails start next Wednesday, April 13!

In order toPicOWSusannah Jenner make the open sails even more successful, you can now register online. This way, If we are short on skippers or crew we can put a call out through our social media tools and member profiles to get more sailors!

If you aren't able to pre-register, don't worry! We would love to have you come sailing anyway.
