Spring Kick-Off and Potluck

The sailing season is here, and we couldn't be more excited! To share our enthusiasm and get the season started right we are hosting a kick-off meeting and potluck this Sunday, March 20, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Baltimore Museum of Industry Decker Gallery.

Board members and staff will be on hand to talk about the exciting season to come, as well as key persons for the racing, cruising, social and outreach groups!

Guests are asked to bring a contribution to the pot luck, but if you can't whip something together in time just bring your smile!  Please head over to the calendar and register!

We are looking forward to a fun night celebrating the sailing season and hope to see you there!

Education

One of the most important parts of sailing education is time spent on the water. Wednesday Open Sails start April 13th and are a great way to gain that experiential education!

Whether you are a crew member looking to gain time on the helm, or a skipper looking for crew to help practice man over board drills or perfect that a roll-tack, member open sails are the perfect place for you!

In order to improve your open sail experience we have added online registration this season. With registration we will know exactly how many crew and skippers we have attending and we will be able to make sure we have the proper ratio of skippers to crew, or vice-versa!

We want this to be one of the best seasons yet at the DSC, and pre-registration for events like member open sails are one of the ways you can help!

Partnership with MAC

 MAC Logo

Did you know that when you are a member of the Downtown Sailing Center you get special offers and pricing at stores, restaurants and gym's around Baltimore? Well it is true!

The Maryland Athletic Club (MAC) - Maryland's Premier Health Club - has partnered with the DSC to become our official fitness sponsor. Join us tonight for an open house at the MAC's Harbor East Location for a great tour of the facilities, a special kinesis workout session with certified trainer Meredith Long, food, drinks and more.

Pack your shorts and gym shoes and come down to learn more about this great partnership and the healthy sailing lifestyle!

Racing Rules Meeting

Attention racers! What is the definition of "Keep Clear?" Is a starboard tack boat required to hail "Starboard" to a port tack boat? If two boats, on the same tack and overlapped, sailing a close hauled course approaching an obstruction, and the outside boat calls for "Room to tack!" what must the inside boat do?

Not quite sure? Join us Thursday, March 24, from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in the BMI Liberty room for the annual Race Rules Meeting

Staffing Changes

Baltimore's Downtown Sailing Center (DSC), is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Lynn Handy as Outreach Manager.

The Outreach Manager is responsible for managing the community outreach programs that focus on providing educational and recreational sailing programs for youth, people with disabilities and people with limited opportunities. The outreach manager's role is also focused coordinating the DSC's biggest asset - its volunteers - by providing volunteer training and management.

Lynn has been a longtime participant with the sailing center.  She has been a juniors camper, a sailing instructor and most recently has been the day-to-day coordinator of the Sailing Instructor Trainee Program.

Head on over to the blog to read about the rest of the exciting new hire!

Skipper Orientation

Skippers! You are invited to attend the DSC's annual skipper orientation this Sunday from 3:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. This two hour informational program will communicate skipper responsibilities, DSC policies and showcase best practices. The program will serve as your 2011 "check-out" and will include chalk talk and on-the-water activities.

If you are skipper level member of the DSC and cannot make this Sunday's skipper orientation meeting, please contact the office to schedule your one-on-one skipper checkout ASAP - and join us after the skipper orientation for the spring-kick off meeting. Click here to register!
