Spring Kick-Off Meeting and Potluck

Don't miss the DSC Spring Kick-Off Meeting and Potluck Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M in the Decker Gallery at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.  This event is open to all DSC members (including prospective members) and volunteers.

Bring a friend who registers at the spring kick-off meeting and receive a DSC T-Shirt (a $20.00 value!)

This event is a great way to socialize with DSC friends new and old and learn about plans for the 2011 season.  For those members who have not yet rejoined for the 2011 season - THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE to take advantage of the early bird discount.  Don't miss out on the savings.

Sign up to attend and register to bring a dish on the DSC calendar.

Staffing Changes

DSC Board President, Steve Smith, announced today that former Director of Operations, Steve Maddox, has left the organization to pursue other opportunities.  Steve Maddox started with The Downtown Sailing Center in 2008 as the Fleet Manager and was later promoted to Director of Operations.

Steve Smith said, "Throughout his three years with the DSC, Mr. Maddox has worked hard to contribute to the improvement of the organization and has been dedicated to its members."  We wish Steve the best of success in his future endeavors.

If you have questions related to education, fleet and facility maintenance or general inquiries, please contact the office at 410-727-0722 or email Executive Director, Kristen Berry.

Cruising

What a turn out! This past Saturday we packed the third floor of the BMI with 70 participants of the cruising program who turned out for the annual cruising meeting.

 Cruising meeting

Thanks to cruising chair John King, the three hours were packed full of program policy, cruise dates, a website tutorial, and much much more.

We will be publishing the meeting minutes on the cruisers page of our website soon, so stay tuned!

A special thanks to those who came to the meeting covered in bottom paint after having attended the work party earlier in the morning!

In recognizing special contributions from cruising members at the meeting on Saturday we inadvertently forgot to mention Barbara MacHale who did a great job in helping organize some of the cruising events.

Thanks Barbara - there is a special recognition hat waiting for you at the DSC!

Volunteer

We need your help. The fleet has moved again - this time they are even closer to their final destination. With the air temperature steadily rising the boats are staged outside in the Landmark Parking parking lot next to our hoist.

This Saturday's work party will be a pivotal one. We will finish sanding the remaining bottoms, paint the ones that are ready, and start to splash some boats!

Not interested in dirty work? We still need help inventorying our storage containers, mending sails, office filing and preparing the dock for the busy season to come!  If your weekends are packed - we can use you during the week too!

We need YOU! Head on over to the event page to register now!

Racing

It is clear by the turn out to last weeks race crew meeting that this will be one of the best racing seasons on record! With several new skippers and lots of new crew, join us Thursday, March 10 for the next race crew meeting.

If you are a skipper in need of crew or a crew looking for a boat to race on we would love to see you this Thursday.

Also, keep an eye on the racing page on our website for calendar updates and Thursday Night Racing documents.

Campus Improvements

Have you been to the lower lot on the campus of the Baltimore Museum of Industry(BMI) lately? If you have, you probably noticed some changes.

Last week, the lot was graded and tons of recycled concrete were laid and rolled to make for a more level and useable space. The eastern edge of the lot was prepped to receive the DSC storage containers in order to create a more contained DSC "compound."

With the generous support of Pierce Flanigan, president of P. Flanigan & Sons and DSC member, the project was completed in a few short days.

P. Flanigan and Sons was founded in 1885 to serve the infrastructure needs of Baltimore City as it grew and modernized. And even now, constructing and maintaining infrastructure for an ever-advancing society remains their focus. We are lucky that they leant their expertise and focus to the DSC.

A very special thanks goes to Pierce and the crew from P. Flanigan and Sons for a job well done.

Accessible Meeting Update

 Volunteering

Join us tonight, Tuesday, March 8 for the accessible sailing volunteer meeting. The meeting will be held at Nick's Fish House.
