Trivia!

Send in your answers to Grady and receive a free DSC T-Shirt for being the first to answer correctly. As always, check our Facebook page for the answer once the correct answer has been received.

A sailboat has a ladder of metal rungs bolted to its side. The rungs are exactly 1 foot apart, and the water comes exactly to the fourth rung (from the bottom). When the tide rises 3 feet then lowers 4 feet, which rung will it reach?

Last weeks question was:

Who was the first person to sail solo around the world? What year did he start and finish?

Answer:

Joshua Slocum from 4/24/1895 to 6/27/1898

Congrats to winner Chris Tom!

Main Steel

If you are a fan of the DSC on Facebook you may have noticed a sneak peak photo post to the DSC status this week.  This past weekend the J/22 and Sonar fleet moved into the Main Steel building - directly across from The Downtown Sailing Center.

Main Steel
New indoor storage!

While we do not have this space indefinitely, we should be able to use this space to complete more winter maintenance than ever before, making our fleet better prepared for the heavy use it will see this season.

There are some special needs that will help us make the most of the Main Steel facility.  The most pressing need is electricity. While we are pursuing powering the building; that may not be feasible, and we are calling upon our readers to help us acquire generators and cordless tools.  Please contact us if you can help.

Education

Watch your email's inbox tomorrow for a new e-news offering from the DSC. We think it is something everyone will really like!

Cruising Update

WOW! With 49 registrants (and more walk-ins possible) we are going to have a great cruising meeting Saturday March 5, 2011. In order to make this meeting a success and serve those interested individuals who cannot attend, we are asking that you send in questions you have regarding the cruising program and the DSC prior to the meeting.

With these questions, we will be able to answer everyone's individual questions directly as well as build a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the meeting and the cruising program.

Please send your questions here.

Duck Pin Bowling Recap

A special thanks to everyone who braved the big breezes on Saturday and joined dozens of sailors at Patterson Bowling Center for the annual DSC duck pin bowling social!

With more than 2700 balls rolled, hundreds of pins smashed, more than 100 slices of pizza eaten, 94 cans of beer imbibed, and nearly 50 duck pin bowlers happy; the 2011 duck pin bowling event was a smash hit!

Jim K. Duck Pin

Special thanks goes to Linda Koehnlein (Events Committee Co-Chair), Jim Koehnlein and Erin Jones for their help in preparing for and running this event.  With your help we were able to provide a fun event for DSC sailors and stay on budget.  Jim even capped off the day with the lower deck's high score!  Well done and thanks!

Next year's event (February 18, 2012) is already being planned.  If you'd like to be a part of organizing this and other social events; Please contact Kristen Berry for more information.

Racing

Nearly 20 Downtown Sailing Center racing skippers attended last week's Racing Skipper meeting. Announced at the meeting were updated racing policies and procedures, the racing calendar and much more. Members can find more information about the event at the racing forum of the members section of the website.

Also announced at the meeting were three major racing events being organized for DSC sailors. The first, the Annapolis NOOD Regatta (April 29, 30 and May 1) is an opportunity for Downtown Sailing Center teams to compete at this major Bay event. Also announced was the return of Sail for Kids and the expansion of the Ya'Gotta Regatta.

If you are interested in participating in any of these events, would like to volunteer or want more information, please contact Kristen Berry.
