Newsletter News

This year at the DSC we have worked hard to make the newsletter as informative, pertinent, and fun as possible. In an effort to keep the content as valuable as possible, during the fall and winter months we will be publishing the newsletter on a bi-weekly basis.

As always we encourage the friends and family of the DSC to send in suggestions and ideas of content, pictures, trivia, and anything else you think would improve the value of the newsletter.

For newsletter info, or to send in content please email DSC Office Manager Grady Byus

In the meanwhile, we encourage you to interact with us via our social media tools including our Facebook page and Twitter feed! You can find both links below.

Work Parties

Thank you to all the volunteers who have committed to helping us decommission the fleet this fall.  By registering early, you are helping us prepare to make these work parties the most productive in DSC history!

Starting November 6th join us to help decommission the fleet every Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

The party will be split into several groups. We ask that you sign up ahead of time and let us know which group you would prefer to participate in. The groups will be as follows:

-Sail teams (3 ea) - remove sail covers, remove, inspect, sort and store sails.

-Cleaning teams (3 ea) - remove pumps, buckets, throwables and trash from boats.  Inspect, sort and store equipment.  Wash boats.

-Boom teams (3 ea) - remove booms, label with boat name, secure and store.

-Mast lowering team (4 ea) - secure halyards, lower mast, remove rigging and mast from boat.

-Mast securing team (4 ea) - remove Windex, label mast with boat name and store in rack.

We will also need volunteers with vehicles that can tow the boat's trailers. If you would like to volunteer to help with this please contact Steve Maddox.

E-mail Grady if you have any questions or to sign up! Please indicate what work team you would like to be a part of, what your second choice is, and what dates you are available.

We know everyone's favorite social party of the year is the Halloween costume party, so we decided to do it bigger and better this year!

The October Friday Social is going to be merged with the 1st annual Halloween on the Harbor to allow our members more time on the water and more SPOOKTACULAR fun!

Saturday, October 30, 2010 the Downtown Sailing Center will host the 1st Annual Halloween on the Harbor to benefit the DSC's community outreach programs.

The Halloween on the Harbor will be a family friendly event that we hope will result in EVERY DSC BOAT being sailed on the harbor.  With the work parties right around the corner this is a great chance to get that end of season sail in, while benefiting the DSC and our community outreach programs.

There will be no cost for this event but donations are suggested.

Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race  Week Is Almost Here!

The schooners will begin arriving in Fells Point for the 21st annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) this weekend!

On Wednesday, October 13, the Parade of Sail begins in Fells Point at 5:00 pm and winds its way around the Inner Harbor (be careful if you are sailing DSC boats on Wednesday evening!). Then, the boats cast off Thursday morning to arrive at the start line just south of the Bay Bridge for the first warning gun at 1:30 pm.

Many DSC members are race volunteers and some will even be crew on vessels "racing to save the Bay". For more information about the GCBSR, go to www.schoonerrace.org
Trivia!

The first person to answer the question correctly wins a DSC t-shirt. Email your answers HERE

While Christopher Columbus' original goal was to reach the Indies by sailing west, who won the race by sailing east around Africa to be the first to reach the Indies and in what year?
