Fall Adult Education Opportunities

Don't miss out on the best time of the year to sail and learn! The fall is regarded by most sailors on the Chesapeake as the best time of the year to sail due to the steady winds and cooler temperatures!

Contact us
to learn more about the many opportunities for you to keep honing those skills and learn new ones.

Adult Education:

We have a few remaining spaces in our Saturday classes taking place October 2nd and 9th.  We offer Introduction to Sailing, Intermediate Sailing, and Basic Keelboat Certification.  Call the office to register TODAY!

Cruising Courses:

October 20th through the 24th we are offering US Sailing's Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising courses.  This five-day, four-night course offers students the chance to learn in a real-world environment aboard a 43-foot sailing ketch. The classes give each student a chance to be "Captain for a day," which helps prepare students to participate in weekend cruises and bareboat chartering. Students will learn basic coastal navigation, steering, sail trim, proper use of a VHF radio and a variety of other skills.

US SAILING Safe Powerboat Handling Course:

Did you know that a sailboat under power is no longer considered a sailboat but a powerboat?  Learn basic powerboat systems, maneuvering, docking and safety in a two-day, hands-on, on-the-water powerboat course.
October 2nd and 3rd.

US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructor Course:

We are excited to announce that the DSC will host a US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructor course.  The class is October 15 -17.  You can learn more about it and register on the US SAILING website.

Tough Sailing At North Americans

Executive Director, Kristen Berry and Office Manager, Grady Byus raced in the J/80 North American Championships last week in Marion, Massachusetts. Fresh off of a second place finish at Annapolis Race Week the teams hopes were high.

Instead of the easy stroll to the podium we had hoped for, we were faced with atypical wind conditions for Buzzards Bay and the best group of J/80 racers ever gathered in the U.S. With a finish smack dab in the middle of 44 boats we were left wanting more.

Why share our less than desirable finish with you? Because sailing is always about improvement! Weather it is a day sail, an overnight cruise, or a championship, there is always more to learn while on the water.

Next on the schedule for the team is the J/80 World Championships in Newport, RI in the beginning of October. With the lessons of the North American's clearly in our minds, We have already started to make sure we are mentally, physically, and strategically prepared for an event that will have twice as many boats and some of the best sailors in the world. Thanks for the support at NA's and we will do our best to represent the DSC at Worlds!
