Fall Adult Education Opportunities

Schools are back in session, especially sailing school here at the DSC.  Contact us to learn more about the many opportunities for you to keep honing those skills and learn new ones.

Adult Education:

We have a few remaining spaces in our Saturday classes taking place September the 11th and 18th and October 2nd and 9th.  We offer Introduction to Sailing, Intermediate Sailing, and Basic Keelboat Certification.  Call the office to register TODAY!

Cruising Courses:

October 20th through the 24th we are offering US Sailing's Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising courses.  This five-day, four-night course offers students the chance to learn in a real-world environment aboard a 43-foot sailing ketch. The classes give each student a chance to be "Captain for a day," which helps prepare students to participate in weekend cruises and bareboat chartering. Students will learn basic coastal navigation, steering, sail trim, proper use of a VHF radio and a variety of other skills.

US SAILING Safe Powerboat Handling Course:

Did you know that a sailboat under power is no longer considered a sailboat but a powerboat?  Learn basic powerboat systems, maneuvering, docking and safety in a two-day, hands-on, on-the-water powerboat course.
September 18th and 25th October 2nd and 3rd.

US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructor Course:

We are excited to announce that the DSC will host a US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructor course.  The class is October 15 -17.  You can learn more about it and register on the US SAILING website.

Grilltastic!

We asked, and you come through! With generous donations from many DSC members, friends, and family, we were able to purchase a fantastic new grill last week just in time for the Friday social party!

The new grill will allow us to cook more, grill faster, and be more environmentally friendly because it uses one third of a normal grills propane.

A special thanks to Christine Compton, Alex Gardiner, Sean Polce, Carolyn Theiss, Tracey Schutty, Merrit Keffer, Carlos Borroto, Lisa Smith, and many others for your generous donations!

A Sad Note From The DSC

Kathleen Pirone, a long time member and skipper of the DSC died on September 2, 2010 after a valiant and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Kathleen took on her diagnosis with a calm and determined manner, much the same we she lived her life. When you met Kathleen you would be immediately drawn to her for her genuine nature and infectious laugh. In addition to having a love of sailing she loved to work wiht students in her capacity as a reading teacher. That love and respect was reciprocated by her students. Kathleen's two daughters, Cary and Miriam, are a tribute to their mother. They came to her side and were an inspiration to everyone as to what a family should be.

The memorial for Kathleen will be at Stony Run Friends Meeting House on Saturday, September 11 at 2:00 p.m. and there will be a reception there afterwards.
