Access Dinghy Orientation

Want to get checked out on one of the Access Dinghies? We are hosting an Acces Dinghy orientation Sunday, August 29 from noon to 3 p.m. At the orientation, DSC members can get checked out to use the Access Dinghies. The dinghies provide a great opportunity for crew-level members to take a boat by themselves while having fun and working on sailing skills. Please call or e-mail Grady to sign up. Space is limited.
Ya'Gotta Be Proud

Thanks for helping make Ya'Gotta Regatta a success this past Saturday! Twelve people with disabilities sailed on access dinghies and cruisers and more than 100 people came throughout the day to volunteer and cheer our sailors on.

Volunteers set up the party, rigged the dinghies, transferred sailors into boats, organized lifejackets and made signs in support. Volunteers skippered and crewed cruisers and sailed with sailors with disabilities. It was, as always, the volunteers who made the Ya'Gotta Regatta happen.

And we can't, of course, forget the race. DSC member Ed Duggan, a crowd favorite, won the singles division and Ryan Wess and his father Tom won the doubles division, but everyone who sailed received a medal. In addition, Santa Wallace, a veteran DSC accessible sailor, received the Accessible Sailor of the Year plaque for outstanding spirit and attitude.

Fridays Are For Fun...

Fun racing that is! Don't forget about our fun races every Friday at 5:30 p.m. If you are a skipper and want to learn about racing, take a keelboat out to participate in our relaxed race to Fort McHenry and back.

Not a skipper? No problem! Get checked out on the Access Dinghies August 29 and be able to take a dinghy out for some fun short-course racing.

Ever wondered what goes on in the race committee's minds? Learn for yourself by giving our race committee extroadinaire Tom Hicks a hand and get trained to run your own race committe one day.
We Need a Grill!

Over the years the DSC has grilled countless burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers during our social events. The hardest worker at each and every event -- the grill -- has finally reached retirement and we need your help to reach our goal of $400 to buy a new grill.

Your contribution will help us purchase a new grill and utensils that can handle the rigors of DSC use. Help keep the parties rocking and the burgers cooking -- donate today!

The donor who contributes the most will have the new grill named after them. Don't you want to live on in grill infamy?

Make a Donation

You do not need a PayPal account to make a donation. If you do not have an account, look for the "continue" button in the center of the screen under, "Why use PayPal?"

Help Us Make Next Summer a Success

Outreach ended last week; the sailing instructor trainees are back to high school and Juniors Camp ended last week. Nothing spells fall like the end of programs!

Here in the office, we learned a lot this summer, and we have some great ideas for next year. As we review the summer, we'd love to hear what you have to say. If you have any ideas for next year's youth and community outreach programs, please send Allie an
e-mail at Allie. And, as always, if you know of a group that would be interested in sailing next year, or even this fall, make sure to let us know!
WOW... Work On Woodwind!

Ever wanted to work on a 74' schooner? Our good friends at Schooner Woodwind in Annapolis are looking for crew for the rest of the season. If you are interested visit the link below and fill out an application. This will be an experience you will not forget!

What are the three paralympic sailing classes that were part of the 2008 Paralympic Games?

The answer to last week's question is:
The water level in the pool drops.

Congrats to the winner, Scott Kirwin!
 Steve Gross
(Steve, man behind the curtain)

Downtown Sailing Center's Person of the Week is  Steve Gross.

If you have ever been to the Ya'Gotta Regatta or worn a DSC t-shirt, then you probably know about Steve Gross.

Steve founded the DSC accessible sailing program with nothing more than a plastic lawn chair and some bungee cords. He started what has today become a nationally recognized program.

Steve has been involved in many aspects of the DSC over the years and has helped shape the sailing center into what it is today. Thanks for all of your work Steve!
