Friday Night Fun Race

Fast is fun! There's no better way to improve your sailing and learn racing skills than to join fellow DSC members for Friday night racing. With DSC super-volunteer Tom Hicks running the big boats on their normal course out to Fort McHenry and back, and Access Dinghies in close for new racers, there really is something for everyone.

Of course not everyone wants to be on the water racing, so this week, in addition to tips and tricks for the new racers, Tom will be training a new crop of race committee members on how to operate the starting sequence, set a fair line and manage a race course.  And if you think this means you have to pick between sailing in races or running them, think again! With many short races planned for the access dinghies on Friday night, everyone has a chance to race.

So if you are a DSC member interested in learning about racing, join us Friday for some fun.The race to the Fort starts around 6 p.m., with access dinghy racing to follow.  And if you haven't been checked out to sail access dinghies, contact Grady Byus, office manager, to get on the list for the next orientation session.

Ya'Gotta Regatta!

The ninth annual Ya'Gotta Regatta is coming up on August 21. The Ya'Gotta Regatta is the end-of-summer culmination race event for the DSC's free, volunteer-driven, Access-Open sail program for people with disabilities. The event is the Maryland Department of Disabilities'  August event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Ya'Gotta Regatta events include a fun race and a competitive race with live play-by-play commentary by the DSC's own Kirk Culbertson and Sadiq Zaghab. After all the boats have crossed the finish line, there will be an awards ceremony and a lunch for all participants, volunteers and spectators. Special commemorative t-shirts will be on sale at the event for $20, but volunteers who RSVP ahead of time will receive their shirts free.

If you would like to volunteer for the regatta, we'll need people to set up the party, help with the boats or just help out in general, please e-mail Allie. Remember - if you do not RSVP, you won't get a free Ya'Gotta Regatta 2010 t-shirt!

We're also looking to create a crowd to watch the race and the awards ceremony, so please mark your calendars and plan to come cheer our sailors on. The racing starts at 10 and the awards ceremony with lunch starts at noon!

Thank You, Meghan!

If you called the DSC office this season you were likely greeted by the cheerful voice of our outstanding summer intern, Meghan Lepley. Meghan is a rising junior at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and connected with the DSC through the Walter Sondheim Jr. Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program. She was one of 20 hand-picked outstanding young leaders who were placed with nonprofit organizations in Maryland.

Meghan played a significant role in the day-to-day operations of the DSC, as well as contributing to our efforts to improve out office systems. While not a sailor when she arrived, Meghan also participated in Monday night adult education classes, and proved she can tie a bowline as fast as anyone.

Meghan is back to school, and her energy and hard work will be missed around the office. If you would like to thank Meghan for her efforts at the DSC, you can e-mail her HERE.  If you would like to volunteer to help fill Meghan's shoes and contribute time to our daily administrative needs, please contact Grady Byus, office manager for more information.

As a final fairwell to Meghan, DSC Executive Director Kristen Berry and Meghan battled it out on the courts to determine the best baller in the DSC office. Each picked another staff member for the two-on-two game. Team Kristen, helped by SIT Instructor Jim Waller, edged out Team Meghan even though she and teammate Peter Hegel held the lead early on. For pictures of the epic battle check us out on Facebook!

We Need a Grill!

The August first Friday party rocked the pavilion with great sailing, Caribbean flavors and plenty of fun people.  But one thing was clear ... we need a new grill. Partygoers were generous and contributed more than $120 dollars to the grill fund, but we need your help to reach our goal of $400.  Your contribution will help us purchase a new grill and utensils that can handle the rigors of DSC use. Help keep the parties rocking and burgers cooking -- donate today!

Trivia!

The first person to answer the question correctly wins a DSC t-shirt. Email your answer HERE

Most people think that a dock is what you stand on or tie a boat to. What is the true meaning of the word dock?

The answer to last week's question is:

So they can have eggs with their beacons!

Congrats to the winner, Darcie Rothwell!

Gareth

Downtown Sailing Center's Person of the Week is Gareth Morgan.

If you came to the Friday party last week, you were probably wondering who was responsible for that awesome jerk-seasoned chicken. It was our person of the week, Gareth Morgan!

Gareth grew up sailing small dinghies like Lasers in the alligator-infested swamps of northern Florida -- talk about motivation to sail fast!

After spending nearly a year living on the Caribbean islands Eleuthra and Jamaica, Gareth picked up some great island recipes. Once he heard about our Caribbean-themed party, Gareth immediately volunteered his services to prepare the chicken.

It's members like Gareth that help make the DSC such an awesome place!
