Access Dinghy Orientation Want to get checked out on one of the Access Dinghies? We are hosting an Acces Dinghy orientation tonight, Wednesday, July 28, at 5:30 p.m. where DSC members can get checked out to use the Access Dinghies. The dinghies provide a great opportunity for crew-level members to take a boat by themselves while having fun and working on sailing skills at the same time. Please call or e-mail Grady to sign up. Space is limited. |

Its Party Time! Carib' Style, Mon...
It's that time of the month again! August 6 will be the First Friday Party for August. Join us under the pavilion to party Caribbean-style where we will be grilling jerk seasoned chicken and have plenty of beer for everyone. As usual the rest of the dishes will be pot luck so please bring a side dish, dessert, or drinks!
The party will begin at 6 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. We will need three volunteers to help grill throughout the evening and 4 to 5 volunteers to help clean up after the party. Please email Grady if you are available to help during the event!

Outreach News
On Monday, the DSC was attacked by pirates! Well... pretend pirates, that is. The Urban Pirate boat Fearless docked at the end of A dock to take young children and their families from the Casey Cares Foundation out for some swashbuckling while the outreach staff took the older children and their families sailing. The Casey Cares Foundation provides support for families with terminally ill children, and this year was their fourth year sailing with us. They had a great time. Help the outreach staff take out more groups like Casey Cares! If you are able, volunteer an afternoon or a day in outreach as an assistant instructor to an outreach staff or as a skipper with an outreach assistant. We can always use the help! Email Allie if you're interested in helping.

The DSC Rocked The House!
Last Thursday Leadbetters Tavern hosted the DSC and all of its friends and family to a rocking good party. Organized and run by our own cruising chairman John King, the night was filled with amazing musicians from 5 p.m. to close. All of the musicians donated their time and tips to the DSC, as well Leadbetters donated a portion of the bar proceeds, raising more than $400! Nearly 200 people came throughout the evening to help show that the DSC really does know how to have a good time! A very special thanks to John King for organizing this amazing event, to all of the musicians, and to the great folks at Leadbetters for letting us take over the bar for the night! |

The Schooners Are Coming...
The schooners won't start arriving for the 21st annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) until October 10, but you need to get on board now to be part of this year's race!
DSC member and veteran GCBSR volunteer Carolyn Theiss is the GCBSR liaison chairperson this year. Carolyn and friends will be circulating at the Friday Social on August 6 talking to people about the opportunities available during race week (October 10-16). So find Carolyn, let her know you want to be part of this year's Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, mark your calendar and plan to help make this year's GCBSR another memorable race!

Trivia!
The first person to answer the question correctly wins a DSC t-shirt. Email your answer HEREAll answers are units of measurements.
6 feet = 1 ? 100 fathoms = 1 ? 10 cables = 1 ? 5,280 feet = 1 ? 6,076 feet = 1 ? 60 nautical miles = 1 ? 3 nautical miles = 1 ? The answer to last week's question is: 1896, but sailing (referred to as yachting until 1996) was canceled that year due to weather and the first Olympic sailing event was not contested until 1900.
Congrats to last weeks winner Scott Marchant. |

The Downtown Sailing Center's Person of the Week is Juan Peralta.
If you have spent much time in the DSC office, you have likely heard Juan's voice over the radio. After starting out with the DSC in our Sailing Instructor Training program (SIT) Juan moved up the ranks quickly and is now the head instructor of our Juniors camp.
When you spend time with Juan you immediately notice his great spirit, love for sailing -- and how darn smart he is. The University of Maryland noticed this too when they gave Juan a full scholarship. Juan plans to become a mechanical engineer, but said he would love to make a career out of sailing if he can!
