A Message from the President
What are you doing today? The rain finally came down to refresh our parched lawns and gardens. We have just been welcomed back to Washington University by your officers and by a lovely luncheon sponsored by Risa Zwerling Wrighton. Are you in a resting mode, looking at what has been, or energetically focusing ahead at what is to be?
What good is sitting alone in your room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.
Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret
from the musical, "Cabaret"
Are you singing along? Did you remember that we are celebrating University Night in October with dinner at Ibby's and a rousing performance of "Cabaret" at the Edison Theater? And even before that, there is a welcome coffee by Women and the Kemper, a lunch/program by our Meet the Leaders group highlighting women and power, and the Fall Symposium luncheon at which we will be hearing a very unconventional talk about eye disease. Interest groups have started their meetings, but it is never too late to join one. Simply call the hostess before a meeting. All the details are in the Newsletter and/or the Yearbook. What fits you best? Take out you calendar. Jot down the events you don't want to miss.
Come to the Cabaret!

International Women
The year 2011-2012 was one of the most successful for the International Women both in number of women and children attending and in enthusiasm for the events. Gatherings often numbered more than 20 people, particularly on our Ethnic Days. Aprajita Sud talked about wedding celebrations in India to a fascinated group of over 24. She dressed our member, Nomin Munkhuu (Mongolia), in a sari to demonstrate how these are worn. This was followed by a lovely Indian lunch. Japanese Day was outstanding. Harumi Fukunaga showed us the technique of putting on an obi, and Shizoko Kidokoro, her daughter, Natsuke, and Carol Shapiro told us about Setsuban, the process of chasing away evil spirits. Again, 38 of us shared a lovely lunch. For Greek day, 36 women attended and our own Assimo Azariadis (Greece) dressed Jane Tian (China) in a Greek dancer's dress; then we ate Greek delicacies. Finally we participated in Arab Day, organized by Manal Tabbal and her Arab friends. Forty-four women and a number of children tried Arab folk dancing, heard about the different countries from which people came, and again, ATE. Other popular activities included wreath making, visiting the Botanical Garden to see the orchid show and the Christmas display, walking in Powder Valley Conservation Center and bowling. Club members are invited to join us to meet the International Women. Just let us know you are coming. |
