Fantasy Fence!  Have you seen it?

Fantasy Fence!

The I.D.E.A. Store was the community partner to this amazing art installation in Downtown Champaign, Illinois at the Metropolitan Building fire site.  Remember the Community Chain Project you helped us with last spring?  The Chain has a special place now in the fence design.  Over 350 feet of the chain was put up and it reflects the diversity of the many of you that helped!  Talk about re-use!

The dedicated crew of 6 for the fence installation worked over 400 hours in the wee hours of the morning during the 2nd hottest July on record!  Over 100,000 square feet of used Eco Flexx vinyl was cut in strips (Thank you, Peter Woods!!) and woven and tied into place according to an overall design by Gail Rost - but with individual flair by the crew!  Thanks to the building owners for their permission to use the space, too.  Enjoy the color, the movement and the beauty of something that might have just ended up in the landfill without another shot at use.

What is an Eco-Edu-Art Marketplace, Anyway?

It's part of the mission of The I.DE.A. Store to not only provide you RETAIL ACCESS to great stuff and a place to DONATE your great stuff, but to provide opportunities for you to CREATE with great stuff.  So, we have worked hard and are still working hard to provide you with ideas on how to use re-use materials, how to identify materials that can be reused or should be recycled, and just learn about the impact simple re-use can have on our lives on this limited-resource planet.  From the very beginning, the environmental message and skill development have been key to our business plan.  We are providing ideas you can follow up on through this newsletter and links with creative ideas on our website and, now that our new classroom is almost complete, we look forward to developing a menu of workshops and classes that you and your friends and family can take together to help sustain the store, to spread the word about re-use and to learn skills to reuse materials!
For the Fall 2011 semester, you can pick and choose from 1-night workshops, 2-night workshops and open studios.  Shauna Carey, our Education Coordinator and Carol Jo Morgan, our Environmental Specialist along with a team of volunteers are going to provide:  Paper and fabric beadmaking, bookmaking, paper making, plastic collage, "plarn" work, deconstruction and reconstruction, coil baskets, lampshade construction, and materials exploration.

Workshop registration begins next week on August 10 with on-line and store registration opportunities.  We should have a paper list in the store by Friday of this week so that you can think about what you want to take.
And, if you have ideas about what you want to explore, let us know!  We are already thinking about Spring 2012!

NEXT Blowout Sale...August 24, 2011 and its
ALL ABOUT PAPER, School and Business Supplies!

Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 2 pm - 7 pm in the NEW CLASSROOM!

folders

We all know that we still use paper in this virtual world of ours and that it doesn't always have to match, be a full case, have pristine edges or be a certain color.  Of course sometimes we DO need those things too - and The I.D.E.A. Store ALL ABOUT PAPER, School and Business Supply Blowout will have them, too!  New paper, partial packs, just unneeded post-its, pads and bits, notebooks, binders, folders, organizers, staples, pens, pencils, random office supplies - you name it, we will probably have at least one.

Many THANKS to those of you who shopped our Jewelry Blowout last week!  It was so popular that we are considering running it again for two days in November with more inventory.  Keep your ears open and we will get the word out!

NEW HOURS!

The shopping and drop-off weekday hours will 2 - 7 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.  And, now on Saturdays we will now be open from 10 am - 3 pm.  We appreciate all your support in both shopping and dropping-off your really excellent donations!

So, What's This All About?

The Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation saw a need in the community to accomplish several things: 1.  Support the arts and arts education, 2.  Support environmental education in our communities, 3. Impact the environment by reducing the rate of waste disposal, 4. create a place for everyone to have access to quality materials and 5. Support itself in light of the difficult economic times.  So donate your discards and shop re-use.  Its about making a difference!
