Recycling Part I: Recycling 101
A little bit about what you CAN recycle and how to do it...
Everyone has been doing such a wonderful job bringing us donations - far beyond what we had hoped for and incredible quality!! Unfortunately, some items are things we just can't take. BUT! Don't give pitch your stuff! Recycle if possible!
For example, here at The I.D.E.A. Store, we just can't take those containers that have had food in them - like yogurt, and other dairy plastic or those little pudding cups. Occasionally, you will spot some here but only because Carol Jo painstakingly re-cleans and sterilizes them... So, what to do? First, re-use them yourself if you can! They make great painting cups or plant starters. If you even use something 1 more time, you are slowing down the stream of waste...it really can make a difference. Used it a 2nd time and now you need to recycle? Check out the bottom of the next container you end up with. Do you see that little recycling triangle symbol on the bottom? Yes? check out the number in the triangle. Most recycling efforts in our area will take up to through #5. We have heard that ABC is taking through 7 now too - so that may be an option for you. Rinse them out and pop them in your recycling bin! No triangle? Rats. Its not recyclable. In your next shopping trip you might consider purchasing a product that can be recycled! Just the other day, a nice gentleman came in the store and told us he takes apart his unwanted VHS tapes, removes the tapes and recycles them!
Check with your garbage hauler if you are unsure about what you can recycle. For those of you that aren't offered recycling services there are drop-off sites in our community. Check out these two for-profit businesses: Illini Recycling and Green Purpose, LLC.
