I.D.E.A.'s!

January 12th-18th, 2011

Great classes and parties are happening every week at The I.D.E.A. Store!  Each one offers you the opportunity to work with unusual materials in new ways, be inspired and develop your creative skills, and increase your understanding that reusing castoffs helps protect natural resources.

Ideas abound here! Our talented teachers choose projects that use materials you can find in the store.  As you work with them, you'll learn the interesting properties and ecological impacts of all kinds of things (like billboard vinyl and non-recyclable CD cases) that would ordinarily end up in the area's landfills.

Beat the winter doldrums by registering (and reserving your space) today for January and February classes.  Class size is limited so participants get full benefit of instruction and materials.  Schedule your special celebration - birthday, retirement, new baby --  with us!  Expect more inspiring projects throughout the year.  If you've seen something you'd like to learn to (re)make, The I.D.E.A. Store's Education Coordinator, Carol Jo Morgan, would like to hear from you at caroljo@the-idea-store.org .

"If my job as an artist is to fill the world with 'more things,' I feel it is equally important that I reclaim materials from the waste stream to make space for my work....I believe that creative re-use has the potential to spark new ways of looking at the world... if one thing can be turned into another, what else can we change?"

- John Tunger

BundledProject
Example of items being bundled.

This class is for adults. Class size is limited to 8 participants.

Instructors: Lisa Kesler and Carol Jo Morgan (Learn more about Lisa at www.lisakesler.com.)

$25 per person for this session*, includes materials, inspiration and instruction, and use of our tools.

Optional preparation: Look through your own supplies and bring materials you'd like to include in your bundle.

This is the first of 3 sessions inspired by the "Disintegration Collaboration" project involving artists around the world who assembled bundles of materials, exposed them to all types of weather conditions, then used the results in their artworks. You'll learn about degradation rates of various items during different seasons, how they will interact with each other in that process, and how to bundle your informed choices for satisfying results. You'll have the option of taking your bundle home so you can observe it, or to a designated location for maximum exposure to winter's elements.

Ages 10 and up. Class size is limited to 8 participants.

Many of today's advertising billboards are made of non-recyclable vinyl which can be re-used creatively in a number of ways. We'll trace billboard history, evaluate modern-day vinyl's properties and workability, and look at product possibilities. If the class fills up, your payment will be reversed - we will let you know!

Why does she volunteer at the store? It's a really good concept. A great way to encourage the next generation to re-use and re-cycle. The store gives artists options for cheap, innovative materials. 'Anyone can find anything here.'

NEWS!

We have an ever changing stock of supplies. What is this? We don't know. What could it be? The possibilities are endless.
