Going on Vacation?

Never know what to pack or rather how much to pack?  Ever wonder which items might be better to choose when going away because of the fabric? Wrinkle-free fabrics vs. Iron-me-please!! fabrics or machine wash vs. dry clean only can make the difference in your suitcase!

What Should You Pack?

Look at fabrics and materials!
Make sure you look at the tag before packing your clothes.  Some fabrics are easier to travel with because they are wrinkle free. Jersey knits and other man made fabrics like polyester, nylon, rayon, cotton/lycra blends, and microfibers are easy to throw in your suitcase whether your are on a business trip or vacation!  If you plan to bring clothes that tend to be more "unpredictable" fabrics, like silk, satin or linen, then try using a garment bag to pack rather than folding everything into a suitcase.

Climate Control
Expect the unexpected!  Check the weather report for the area you will be traveling to.  Bring a light sweater in case there is a cool day or night.  Gage what type of clothes you should bring depending on where you go and what activities you plan on participating in. And remember, if you do forget something then you have a new excuse to go shopping!

Tricia's Tips
There are a few items I never leave home without, and recommend you do the same:

1. A scarf- whether you are visiting a tropical island or the Antarctic, you will use a scarf. They are the best compact layering piece you could have. At the beach they can be worn as a sarong or used as a blanket, or they are great on boats and cruises that are windy or airplanes that are cold. In a cooler climate or at night when the sun goes down they can be used as a shawl for warmth and of course they are a great way to instantly dress up a tee or tank and jeans. Best part is that they fit anywhere! Easily folds up into medium to large purses, and with smaller purses they can be tied around the strap as a decoration until they are needed.

2. The appropriate bag- there is nothing more annoying than worrying about to transport your belongings while on vacation. Yes ladies, we may tell ourselves we are packing light and wont need our usual everything-but-the-kitchen-sink bags but then we get there and need our phones, cameras, ID, money, lip gloss, room key, etc. So think about where you are going and what the suitable purse for that destination is. Beach vacay? Definitely bring a beach bag because you do not want to ruin your good leather purse in the sun, sand and salt water. Will you be touring and walking alot? Bring a cross body bag or back pack. Hands free is the best way to feel like you are not lugging everything around with you when you really are. Will you be attending any events, celebrations or dinners? Bring a clutch. And the best part here is that quite often clutches can then double as wallets and fit easily in carry ons, beach bags and larger crossbody's or back packs.

3. A white tank top- just trust me. You never know when you'll need it but chances are you will, and it goes with everything. Realize when your there that a shirt you packed is actually a little too see through or low cut? Layer on the tank! Realize you forgot to pack jammies? (Don't act like thats never happened!) Tank to the rescue!
 How Should You Pack?

As many of you may have seen on Facebook, the past week I've been relaxing in Martha's Vineyard!  I didn't want to overkill my suitcase with too much clothing, but I packed just enough so that when I was surprised by my boyfriend for an extended stay I still had enough clothes to last me until the end of my vacation!  You should pack enough clothes for you entire stay, and a little extra too! I always anticipate changing each day from a day outfit into a night outfit. This could mean a head to toe overhaul, or simply a change of shoes or jewelry, depending on your taste and your trip.

There are 3 major rules to follow when packing in order to bring the least amount of items but get the most out of them:

1. Try to choose a color a consistent color theme so you can mix and match your clothes. I like to use the black or brown rule: choose one of these colors as your predominant shade for shoes, pants, cardigans, whatever it may be and then base your color palette around that. This will ensure everything your brought can be worn together. (We don't want to see you in a printed pink and purple blouse, black dress pants or skirt and then brown shoes because you didn't bring any black ones!)

2. Layering pieces. Key to versatility and making the most out of what you've got. Think tank top and shorts by day, same tank top, jeans and cardigan by night. Then the next day sundress, night sundress with the cardigan fromt he night before, etc.

3. Bring appropriate shoes. I am a major shoe lover so may be a bit biased here, but I feel like a pair of shoes can tell the store of your entire outfit. Once again you've got that sundress on during the day but now its time for dinner. Add a pair of heels and that cardigan and you are instantly ready for the night out! Be sure to include shoes from the following categories- walking, all terrain (sand at the beach= flip flops. But if your hiking on this trip flip flops wont do!) and dress up.

4. Remember that what you wore there is an outfit option as well. It typically makes the most sense to wear the bulkiest items on the plane/train so they don't take up space in your suitcase, like sneakers, boots, sweatshirts and jeans. End up running out of outfits while on vacation? Remember the jeans you wore there, enter white tank and scarf ad recommended above, and viola you've got another whole outfit!

And remember to always pack toiletries and cosmetics in a their own sealed bag to ensure any leaks do not damage clothing. Same with accessories, pack those together so they do not get tangled up with or damaged by anything else.

Versatile jewelry is important for everyday outfits, but when you have limited space in your suitcase then it's even more important!  When packing outfits it is still important to keep in mind what accessories you'll be wearing.  Just because you are going to Europe, the Carribean, or the
Mid-West, you still need to keep in mind accessories make the outfit!
