The Power of Accessories

I like to think of my accessories as the exclamation point to my outfit, what sets my style apart and makes it unique to me. Just imagine that there was only one clothing store in the world that only sold one outfit, but there were several shoe, purse and accessory stores. Even though we would all be wearing the same outfit, we would look different because we would all accessorize differently (and some of us not all, though hopefully you will be inspired by this newsletter!).

Accessorizing is an immediate and inexpensive way to update your wardrobe, and really make your style your own. Feeling a bit funky? Rock a studded belt or carry a studded clutch. Feeling Classic? Layer thin gold strands with your pearls for a modern twist. Want to make a statement? Load up your arms with bangles of different shapes and colors. Ladies, want to throw people off? Wear a tie!.

Embrace the concept of putting your own personal stamp on your appearance by simply accessorizing, and you will be surprised by the difference it makes!

One the trendiest accessories for the season are tights, but I know many shy away because they are not exactly sure how to wear them. Hopefully this helps!

Tips for tights:

If your apprehensive about adding tights into your wardrobe, start small with black opaque tights, or a pair with a tone on tone pattern, such as a cable knit (shown on the right) or herringbone. Then you will feel more comfortable working your way up to bolder hues and contrast color patterns.

The easiest way to pair tights with an outfit is to keep the tights in the same color family as your clothing, or keep everything neutral.  By 'the same color family', I mean all cool tones, warm tones, earth tones, all brights (if your daring!), etc. And you are almost always safe when pairing any color tights with black clothing.

Some great color combos to try are:

Oatmeal and navy, brown and rust, navy and olive, black and fuchsia, rust and creme, pink and grey, and plum and cognac

When wearing patterned tights, it is best to pair them with simple, solid colored clothing. If you wish to mix patterns, for example a plaid skirt with a cable knit tight, be sure to keep them in the same color family.

When layering with tights in the winter, wearing substantial materials make the most cohesive statement. For example, tweed, corduroy, denim, wool, and chunky knits should be worn with thicker tights.

When wearing bold tights, let those be your statement accessory. Scale back on jewelry to avoid looking too costumey.

Bright colored or cut out tights are great ways to update party dresses.  In this case, tights should be thinner and closer to shear, or have a bit of a sheen to them.
