Nightshade Andrea Cremer ISBN-13: 978-0399254826 Published: Philomel; 2010 Price: $17.99
Local author Andrea Cremer receives great praise for her debut novel!
"A fantastical mash-up of religious warriors and witch hunts, of feminist will and societal oppression, "Nightshade" is historical fiction - with a modern, pop culture twist. An intelligent reimagining of the past played out in the present with shape-shifting werewolves residing in Vail, Colorado, "Nightshade" is a book for well-read hopeless romantics who like their heroines conflicted, their love interests smoldering and their passions triangulated and torrid, yet unfulfilled." - LA Times

Greetings!
Over the weekend we had the first snow of the season! Heavy, blowing flakes and accumulations up in the hills where we live and a slushy rain down in town by the bookshop. It is a welcome event in most respects, but a sobering preview of what's to come over the next months. Our little husky is delighted; our young chickens not so sure.
The season in the bookshop shifts as well. Rather than attending to the parade of summer visitors we are settling into the "off-season" of community activity and local focus. Author visits are exciting and interesting events for all of us. Our Saturday afternoon with New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger was a great success! Some sixty to seventy people from as far away as Ironwood and Winter filled the Big Water Cafe across the street for his reading and remarks. By the time he was able to follow the crowd to the store it was so jammed that the way had to be cleared. New Krueger fans went for Iron Lake (his first) while the old-timers got signed copies of Vermilion Drift (his latest). Don't worry, if you missed the event, we do have a limited supply of signed copies of most of Krueger's titles in the shop.
We are eagerly looking forward to a visit with Andrea Cremer whose new teen novel Nightshade vaulted onto the New York Times bestseller list last week. Our own Jack Beagan led the inaugural Poetry Workshop last Tuesday evening. Friday morning, Storytime at Big Water attracted a dozen youngsters who begged for more - especially more of the oh-so-popular Skippyjon Jones. The first gathering of the Book Club met this week and our Conversational Spanish Salon and a variety of holiday events are on the horizon. And that's just for starters, so stay tuned!
Happy reading to you all!

Evenings of Poetry at Apostle Islands Booksellers Every Wednesday at 6:30pm
Poetry is a way to weave words together in a way that lets our mind see the image the writer sees. Finding the words that make the image come alive can be a very rewarding and creative process. The enjoyment of reading poems we have written, or perhaps reading a favorite poem written by someone else, out loud, is a wonderful experience. Apostle Islands Booksellers would like to invite you to be a part of a very casual workshop where you will be encouraged to read, write and share. Join us every Wednesday from 6-8:30pm at the store. Apostle Islands Booksellers Book Club Every other Tuesday at 6:30pm
As the winter months approach we are looking forward to even more time to read good books and then of course discuss them! This is an open club and visitors are welcome to attend as few or as many evenings as they like. Our goal will be to read one book a month. What books? The first book we will be reading and discussing is Rearview Sunset by Brett Champan (selected on Nov. 16th). Champan is a regional author and we are excited to be reading his book in anticipation of his visit to the shop on December 3rd. Remember, if you are interested in joining us, it's not too late! As a member of our book club, you receive 20% off this title! Our next gathering is Tuesday, November 30th - we look forward to seeing you there!

What we're reading...
 The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Recommended by Kristen This book is beautifully written. It is almost as if you can hear the words coming from the mouths of these southern women as you read them. It is a very difficult subject matter for those of us labeled "Generation X'ers." I did not grow up with segregation and racism in my life. I never would have imagined that someone of a different color was lesser or greater than myself. That said, Stockett does an amazing job putting the reader in these scenes and truly feeling each emotion as they are felt by these amazingly brave women of color in the south during the 60's. You are sure to be drawn in by the character Aibileen as she struggles to raise the daughter of her white employer. The relationship between Aibileen and this toddler is heart-felt, yet heart-breaking. Aibileen is the first of several maids to pair up with Skeeter (a young white writer) to write the stories of these black maids. As the racism and violence escalates, more and more maids join this project. This is a story of bravery, strength and relationships, and I highly recommend it.
