NFL Training Camp for LifeWhether you agree with it or not, kids look up to athletes. What they say and how they act have an impact on the youngsters that look up to and follow them.

 

That's why the message that more than 300 New Jersey teens heard at Rutgers University on June 4 was so important. The event was the launch of Training Camps for Life, a partnership of the NFL Players Association, A CALL TO MEN and the Verizon Foundation. 

 

The half-day, NFL-star-studded event at Rutgers University addressed topics such as overcoming adversity, decisions and consequences, and healthy teen relationships - a critical addition to the  Training Camps for Life agenda.  The event was the first of 12 sessions that will be held across the country this year. They are funded through a $250,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to A CALL TO MEN, an internationally recognized men's organization addressing domestic and sexual violence prevention.

Scholarship winners

Like lattes and U2 tickets, the cost of college tuition never goes down. On average, tuition rises 4 to 6 percent annually. Throw in a tough economy and rising consumer costs and the picture doesn't improve.


However, paying for college was made a little easier for five high school students in New Jersey. They are among 530 students nationwide who will receive scholarships of $5,000 each for the 2011-2012 academic year through the Verizon Foundation's scholarship program for the children and dependents of company employees.

Women AwareWorking with domestic abuse victims can be an emotionally trying experience for those organizations charged with dealing with that issue. So, it's always beneficial to hear and share experiences with other professionals in the field.


That was the case earlier this month when the New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women and the Rutgers University Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance hosted the ninth annual conference on domestic violence entitled "Domestic Violence: It's Everyone's Issue." A $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation helped support the conference, which was held at Rutgers' Busch Campus.

Common Sense Media LogoWith kids out of school for the summer, it means more time to spend on the computer. In recognition of Internet Safety Month in June, Verizon is working with national experts to raise awareness about important online safety issues.


During the month, Verizon's Parental Controls Center is releasing a series of educational videos on cyberbullying to highlight actionable advice for parents. Verizon, along with Verizon Foundation partner Common Sense Media, is also running a national public service advertising campaign across its television, online and wireless platforms to raise awareness about the integral role parents play in their children's digital lives.
