February 2010 |

You can tell a lot about a society by the heroes it keeps. We work hard. We suffer. We burn. And this week, we celebrate those who have inspired us in 2009: a local cancer-scrapper; a new-daddy soldier; a guy who laid it all on the line for a brother; a SWAT member who started us with CrossFit in the first place; a soldier with a penchant for muscle-ups; a girl with a dream to run. Their stories: we'll deliver them one day at a time, just like their tributes. All you have to do is show up. Keep going. Go again. Live up to their legacy.

Greetings! There's not much black or white in the fitness world. Instead, things occur on a spectrum: processed white flour is bad. "Whole grains" are better - a bit. Vegetables are best. Trans fats are bad; saturated fats are a little better (and necessary,) polyunsaturates are best. Walking is necessary, but shouldn't count toward your exercise goals. Jogging and resistance training are better. An all-encompassing, exciting program are best - by a mile. The 'hard and fast,' unbreakable "rules" of the last decade are being routinely contradicted: some saturated fats are necessary for hormonal regulation. Yes, kids CAN go to a gym. No, treadmill walking isn't the way to long-term fitness. And sorry, but judging your fitness by your weight is like driving while looking through a straw. There's no "right" way or "wrong" way anymore - just good, better, best. Don't wait for perfection; get started now.

CLIENT PARTY JAN 30!
Our All-Brains, No-Grains Challenge went off much more smoothly than expected - most had very little trouble removing grains from their diet, even though it's toughest to get fresh vegetables and fruits in Northern Ontario in January. Great job, everyone! To celebrate, let's get together and EAT! We'll meet at the Park (where else???) at 6pm on Saturday, January 30. If you've been doing the No-Grains Challenge, or participating in Heroes Week, or just reading along..come and meet the family! We'll have a movie showing, too: excerpts from the 2009 CrossFit Games in Aromas, CA! Even without a WOD, it's still a wild bunch! |
Don't Forget: "Murph" - our second-biggest event of the year - is March 6, 2010! Register solo, as a team, or as a "timid" first-timer!

CrossFit Sectionals 2010 Team We talk a lot about, 'The Sport of Fitness.' For years, that term was the domain of the aesthetic athlete: the bodybuilder, the "fitness model," the cover-boy. Now, though, elite fitness is a competitive sport. The CrossFit Games endeavours to find the Fittest Man and Woman On Earth every year. In 2007, you could just show up and participate. In 2008, the first 300 entrants were accepted. In 2009, athletes had to prequalify at a Regional competition. This year, it's even tougher: athletes must first succeed at a Sectional event before moving on to a Regional Qualifier. March 20th, eightCatalyst athletes (including Coach Coop!) will be competing with the best in Ontario. Top 16 move on to Calgary in May. Team Green gear coming soon! In the meantime, you can support the Team by training with them on Fridays at 1pm with special workouts taken from last year's Regional events. Entry by punch card; proceeds to Team travel costs!

Catalyst Teens Next Groups Start February 23 and 24th
In the group that one parent suggested we rename, "6 Weeks Of Early Bedtime For Sixty Bucks!" we're constantly struggling with a wait list. For good reason: kids who exercise at this age will never face the battles with exercise boredom, poor technique, or lack of motivation as many of their peers will. Catalyst Teens gives a broad understanding of technique in basic gymnastics, weightlifting, sprinting and running, rowing, calisthenics, self-challenge, and fun. The most common comment by parents watching their kids: "Wow. I wish I had this stuff when I was a kid!"
Want to get on the list for the February group? Call 256-1344. Kids currently enrolled get first pick of the February groups!

In this, our fifth year of the GO! Newsletter, we'd like to thank you for reading. We post updated stories on the Catalyst Gym website every day; this newsletter is just a collection of the highlights. Thanks for sticking it out with us. Our goal: have you finish 2010 with a list of stuff you've accomplished: bike 50km, run a 5km, lift your bodyweight, get your first pullup, learn to ski......rather than a list of stuff you've purchased. Go get some stories!
