Shavei Israel's 2012 seminar for young Polish Jews concluded last week. The seminar was packed with classes, field trips and opportunities to reconnect with Judaism and learn more about both historic and modern Israel. We spoke with two of the participants, Magda and Kalina. In this special video, they tell their personal stories of discovery and why they came to study in Jerusalem with Shavei Israel. Sixty-one years after his death in 1961, Captain Arthur Carlos de Barros Basto, the founder of the Jewish community in Porto and a passionate advocate for the Bnei Anousim of Portugal, has been posthumously reinstated into the Portuguese army, following a sustained campaign and online petition drive by Shavei Israel.
Basto was drummed out of the military nearly seven decades ago for the "crime" of proudly proclaiming his Jewish heritage. Click here to read more about this historic decision.
