Preparations for the upcoming aliyah of the first group of Bnei Menashe immigrants is kicking into high gear. In advance of their arrival, Shavei Israel has dispatched additional staff to northeastern India.
This is the second time in 2012 that we have sent emissaries from Israel to the Indian states of Manipur and Mizoram, and the lessons being given during this trip are more crucial than ever: they focus on specific content the Bnei Menashe will need to more easily integrate into their new lives in Israel when the long-awaited aliyah from India resumes later this year.

A special Rosh Chodesh celebration in Sajal, India with the Bnei Menashe
Lighting candles for Rosh Chodesh
On the first day of each month, the Bnei Menashe women in northeastern India celebrate "Rosh Chodesh" (the start of the Hebrew month) by coming together to sing, pray and eat. The programs rotate among the 37 synagogues in different towns and villages across the Indian state of Manipur where there are substantial Bnei Menashe communities.
This month, Shavei Israel's"Fellows" in India assembled the largest Rosh Chodesh gathering to date. 220 women from all around Manipur traveled to the small village of Sajal to celebrate with the 70 Bnei Menashe women living there with their families.
