New worship service on Wednesdays
A new midweek service is meeting Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. This is an energetic, refreshing midweek opportunity for worship at NHBC. Join us for upbeat music, encouraging messages, and a fresh new beginning in the middle of your week.
Midweek Prayer & Bible Study has resumed in the fellowship hall and now meets at 5:30. Come for the study and then drop in the worship center to check out the new service. In coming weeks there will be a multitude of opportunities for the NHBC family to volunteer in support of this new midweek service for our neighbors. We will need door greeters, ushers, hospitality hosts and more. Come learn what this service is all about and you will be prepared to be among the first volunteers to sign up!
Bring the entire family and invite your friends, too! Free childcare will be provided for preschoolers through age 3.
There are no children's programs scheduled on Wednesday nights through the summer, but youth will meet in the youth room from 6:30 to 8:00 and the Worship Choir will practice at 7:15. Watch for announcements about children's events coming this fall. |

From the Pastor's Desk
We've had a great summer at National Heights! Our VBS, mission VBS, mission trips, and summer camps have all been wonderful opportunities for us to serve the Lord and reach out to our community. During August we continue the exciting ministry as our new Wednesday service prepares for its community kickoff in September, as we gather items for students at Watkins Elementary School, and as we kick off our new year of Wednesday ministries. Watch for ways you can use the gifts and talents God has given you to serve Him here at NHBC. I can't wait to see what God is going to do through you!

Mission project for Watkins
NHBC Women on Mission are collecting school supplies for Watkins Elementary School students through August 15. Container tubs are located at the church entrances to receive these items. Needed are: # 2 pencils, pink erasers, writing pens, crayons, colored markers, rulers, bottled glue, glue sticks, Kleenexes, scissors, notebook paper, wide and/or narrow lined notebooks, hand sanitizer.
If you prefer to give a donation of funds, you may mark your envelope, "Watkins School." The items given will be used to prepare 100 Welcome Bags for the kindergarten children and with remaining supplies to be given to teachers for distribution as needed by the students. Thank you for your generosity. God bless you for sharing. | |
Here we come a caroling among the leaves so green
Here we come a-wandering, so fair to be seen!
Love and joy come to you and a Merry Christmas too....
Wait a minute! Christmas songs in August??
That's right! We're getting ready to start our Christmas Choir again! And soon our halls will be filled with the sounds of voices practicing and learning their music. Remember how much fun we had last year! And to begin the festivities the choir is excited to host their 2nd annual Christmas in August. And you're invited!
Last year's Christmas Celebrations were such a memorable time in the life of our church. I enjoyed singing all the old carols and learning new ones as we celebrated the love and joy of the season. And, I am so excited about our celebrations this year.
We will be presenting the plans, music, and schedule of practices for the 2012 Christmas Celebrations on August 26th in the fellowship hall during a luncheon event. So, if you want to be a part of this year's Christmas Choir, you'll want to be there. Besides, it's once again the first Christmas party of the year! Hope to see you there! |
Women on Mission learn about Siberia
Tuesday Women on Mission will meet on August 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship room. A carry-in pot- luck lunch will be served at the noon hour. Everyone is encouraged to bring a vegetable, a salad or a dessert.
Rev. Dave Lanham, member of South Gate Baptist Church of Springfield, will be sharing with the group regarding a mission trip earlier this year to the country of Siberia. Brother Lanham is a retired missionary who has worked with New Tribes Mission as well as our International Mission Board workers. His experiences will be a challenge to us as we each continue to preach the "good news" from here at home to the ends of the earth, knowing God is faithful in his provision for us.
Reports will be given by the nominating committee and mission project plans for the coming year of 2012-2013. Men and women of the church are invited to hear Mr. Lanham, who will speak at about 11:00 a.m.
On Tuesday, August 28, women will gather in the fellowship room at 9:00 a.m. for a work day. They will be making quilts of various sizes that will be donated to Grand Oak Mission Center here in Springfield. Each year the women make from 15 to 20 regular size quilts and about 60 to 75 baby/crib quilts. This work is under the direction of Barbara Fisher, chairman.
The group will also be making salvation bracelets from suede lacing and pony beads. These are given each year to the mission team from Greene County Baptist Association to use on their mission trip to Mexico. Last month our Robb Chandler took about 1,200 bracelets to be used in the area of Guadalajara. They are a valuable entre' into conversation for the plan of salvation with people of all ages. Jean Conrad and Doris Whitcher oversee the making of the bracelets.
There will be a coffee break and snack at 10:00, but no lunch is served on work days. Women of the church are encouraged to come and share in the work and fellowship of the morning. |
Care and Share
The Care and Share ministry to widows of the church community will meet on Thursday, August 30, at 11:15 at Golden Corral North in their meeting room. The luncheon is a time of fellowship and sharing together. The program of the morning will be a testimony by one of the newest staff members at National Heights, Jeanne Carpenter. Jeanne will give a testimony of how the Lord has been faithful to her in preparing her for this position. She will share her goals as Children's Director for National Heights and offer insights into the needs of the children.
If you know of widowed friends who would like to be involved, invite them to attend. Questions may be addressed to Phyllis Sanford, president or leaders Judy Divine and Mildred Burns. |
Prime Timers welcome the Happy Plunkers
Everyone mark this date: Thursday, August 16th! Prime Timers will host the 17-member Broadway Baptist Church Ukulele Band in our Fellowship Hall at 11:00 a.m.
The group was started in 1989 as a ministry of their church. Beverly Thomason has led the group since 2004. They have 11 different inspiring programs they share with many groups including nursing homes.
Archie Kane will lead a business session including reports from the Nominating and Trip Committees. Plan now to attend and bring guests.
A Potluck Luncheon will follow the program. Please bring plenty of dishes. We would like to fill the Fellowship Hall with joy and thanksgiving. |
