Summer brings opportunities to serve
Outreach Vacation Bible School
We are looking for a few people this summer to help with a one week
neighborhood outreach VBS based at the Villa Marie apartment complex. It will be held in the evenings, June 18-22 and will use the same teaching materials as the church's VBS held the week before. Meeting times are to be announced. If you would like to spend a couple of hours a day showing kids how much Jesus loves them, please see Pastor Weatherford.
We will be joining the First Baptist Church of Middletown, Kentucky in a summer rebuilding project in Joplin during the week of July 23-27. Jim Cobban, a former member of NHBC, is the pastor of the Kentucky church. Their team will be staying in Joplin the entire week and we will meet them there daily to work with them on home building projects. You will be able to join the team for a day or two or for the whole week. Mark your calendar and watch church publications for more information.

Everyone in the church family can help support Vacation Bible School at National Heights by saving recyclable materials. Please bring these items to the church office: shoe boxes, paper towel tubes, toilet paper tubes. See the back cover of this folder for complete VBS information and invite some kids you know.
Join the Kids Cafe team!
National Heights will once again be a Kids Cafe site on weekdays this summer. Volunteers had so much fun and were so blessed to work in the Cafe last summer that most commented they would want to sign up again this year. The time has come!
The Cafe will be open from June 4 through August 10 this year -- an earlier start and ending because of the new school calendar in Springfield. We will be serving free lunches to kids 18 and under and their parents or guardians from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This schedule means that the Cafe will be open during VBS week and we will serve picnic lunches from noon until 1:00 each day that week.
We are using a variety of methods to invite all the kids in our neighborhood to join us for lunch. There are no income requirements and we anticipate even larger participation than last year, when we ended the summer serving 75 meals a day. We hope children from the NHBC family will come enjoy lunch with our community guests and help them feel welcome. Please invite your friends and neighbors to come too!
Cooks will be doing most of the food preparation, but we will need 2 kitchen volunteers each day to help serve our guests and 1 or 2 dining room volunteers to assist kids in getting seated and to bus tables between guests. Teams will be assigned to a particular day on a regular rotation and the number of times you serve during the summer will depend on the total number of volunteers. If you would like to serve on a particular day every week, please note that fact under your name on the sign up sheet.
Here's how you volunteer...
You will find sign-up sheets in Sunday School classes and outside worship. On the sheet you are asked to indicate what task you prefer and what day of the week is best for you. After the rotation is set up, all volunteers will receive a schedule of assignments for the summer. Enlist a friend and sign up together. If you would like to count plates served at the kitchen window, please see Marti Blattert. If you have questions, please call Sharan in the church office at 833-4111. We are going to bless kids and have lots of fun doing it -- you will want to be a part of Kids Cafe!

From the Pastor's Desk

The month of May provides several opportunities for ministry at National Heights. This month we highlight our connection with the Greene County Baptist Association. NHBC has a long heritage of ministry alongside the other Southern Baptist churches of Greene County. The GCBA Mission offering Sunday, May 20 celebrates our cooperative work in God's kingdom. May is also a big month of preparation for Vacation Bible School. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to make this year the best VBS experience ever as we share the Good News of our Awesome God. The month also provides opportunities to celebrate our graduates and emphasize the importance of families as we recognize the blessings God provides through our mothers. It should be a great month of ministry and thanksgiving. I can't wait to see what God is going to do through you!
~Vaughn Weatherford |

Week of Prayer for Association Missions Sunday, May 20
We will be focusing on the ministries of the Greene County Baptist Association and receiving donations for the annual Jim Joslin Missions Offering. The Association offering goal is $25,000 and the NHBC goal is $1,000. The Association staff will be utilizing 50% of the offering in support of the Jerusalem Project, a church planting vision to have 120 churches established in the county association by the year 2020. The remainder of the offering will be utilized for international missions, the Guadalajara partnership and evangelism projects. Please note "Joslin" on your offering envelope.
Thanks to the church family for your amazing support of the food and supplies drive for the association's Grand Oak Mission pantry during the month of April. The mission staff reports that assistance requests continue to increase and our gifts are much appreciated. |

The meeting will include a visual presentation as well as sharing of experiences. Their presentation will begin shortly after 11:00. This program was postponed from the April schedule.
After the program, the group will be assembling Mother's Day baskets for the women of our near-by Villa Marie Apartment Complex. Women are reminded to bring your gift items for the baskets. Women on Mission will meet on Tuesday, May 22 at 10:00 in the fellowship hall with President Judy Divine presiding. The women will discuss mission emphases/projects for the summer months. The program will be presented by Sara, mother and mission worker, who is stateside for a short time of rest and mission meetings. She and her husband Jacob work with university students in Taiwan.
A carry-in covered dish lunch will be served at the noon hour. Men and women of the church are invited to attend the program and share the time of fellowship. |

At the NHBC Women's Brunch on Saturday, March 31, attendees were asked to bring personal items for the 75 women residents of Woodland Manor Nursing Home. The response by the women attending was a joy to behold! Various kinds of personal toiletry items, puzzle books, socks, and other items of clothing were given along with funds in the amount of $260. Our brunch theme, "Ageless Beauty" was certainly demonstrated . These items will be sorted and assembled into attractive gift bags for the women and will be delivered shortly before Mother's Day. Thanks to every woman for your generosity in sharing with others. "May the beauty of the Lord be upon us." (Psalm 90:17) ~ Women on Mission Brunch Committee
Thank you so much for everything you did to bless us upon our departure from NHBC. We were overwhelmed with your kindness and generosity shown in the many cards sent and the love offering given. The people of National Heights will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our years with you were among the best years of ministry and friendship we've every known. Thank you again for blessing us so richly. Grace and Peace!
~ Jason, Erin, Eli and Noble Davis
The Personnel Committee wishes to thank everyone for your faithful prayers as we continue our search for a Youth Pastor and Preschool and Children's Minister.
