BOOK GROUPS...
Thinking about joining a book group? Here are some questions to consider when looking for a group you will enjoy:
1. Where can you find book groups? Many groups are formed by invitation only. Other groups are spin-off's from established organizations like churches or senior centers. Many are open groups without affiliation, Libraries and bookstores such as Page 2 BOOKS are open groups. You are always welcome to drop in at an open group meeting.
2. What books do you want to discuss? Many groups focus on one genre, such as non-fiction, best-sellers or women writers. Some groups randomly select books from those recommended by members. A few (like Page 2 BOOKS) choose not to select a focus book, but instead to share 'what we have been reading lately'. This gives members a chance to be introduced to many new authors.
3. What kind of discussion do you enjoy? One approach is to assign a leader for the discussion. This could result in a book review by the leader or more formal questions asked by the leader, depending on the group's expectations. Another approach is to have informal 'chat's about the book, sharing impressions but with little analysis. If you like analysis, look for a group that likes to talk about the structure of the book: language, plot, format, etc. Page 2 BOOKS book group is more likely to talk about the plot and characters of the book, sharing impressions and likes and dislikes.
