     The Rest of the Story...

Ah, taxes are filed and bills are paid!  With all that snow, I am ahead of schedule.  Fortunately we never lost power, so I could just keep working away!
At the end of January husband Rick and I headed for southern California to help a good friend celebrate her birthday and to have an adventure on the Queen Mary in  Long Beach.  I was lucky enough to also hook up with my sister Vicki to tour the Getty Villa just north of Santa Monica.
The Queen Mary is a spectacular ship, launched in 1936 as a grand
Queen Mary.
ocean liner and later carrying thousands of troops during WWII.  We arrived mid-afternoon and enjoyed walking the decks, seeing the captain's quarters and taking pictures of the woodwork, staircases and other renovations.  It was easy to hear the music, the tinkling of glass and laughter.  Most of the changes made for the troops have disappeared.
We spent one night on the Queen Mary.  The rooms are very comfortable, blending the authentic wood and brass with new flat-screen TV's.  We had portholes to peer out of, enjoying the sun reflected in the windows of the Long Beach sky-line.  Rates for the rooms are reasonable and the service is spectacular.  There are over 360 staterooms.
If you want to read more about the Queen Mary, their website www.queenmary.com/Our-Story is the place to go.  The Queen Mary is world famous, having broken many records.  Worth looking into.

Getty Villa
On Monday my sister and I went to the Getty Villa.  This is a replica of an ancient luxurious home, modeled after the residence of a Julius Caesar relative.  It was created by Getty to honor the Villa style of life as well as to house his vast collection of antiquities.  The architecture and gardens are breath-taking, inviting strolling and lingering.  Truly magnificent.  To get a feel for the grounds, go to www.getty.edu/visit/.  There's a 12 minute video to tide you over until you get to see it for yourself!
I love my plane rides.  I am never sorry to have to wait.  I read!  No interruptions.  Hurray!  This trip I read a good mystery by Julia Spencer-Fleming, a romance by Diana Palmer and a little book of children's stories by Oscar Wilde. Fun!
                                                            Happy Reading,  Gayle
