Thank you for telling your friends and family about us!

September 2011

 Greetings!

owl   BACK TO SCHOOL!   It's that time of year--leaves turning yellow, days getting shorter and kids returning to school. And fall arrives.

Are there books for the 'seasons'?  We think so:  light easy reading for the summer, a few best sellers in the fall, some inspirational reading around the holidays and non-fiction for the first of the year.  Sprintime reading includes travel memoirs, adventure books and anything that will take us 'outdoors in our armchairs'.

So now is the time to stock up on best sellers.  Check out our 'green-tagged' section to get the best selection.   And be sure to let us know if you don't see your favorites.  We will do our best to make sure you have the book you want to read!

See you soon!

  HISTORY OF THE PAPERBACK BOOK

When was the first paperback book published?  Many cite THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl S. Buck, printed in 1938.

But if you answered that, you would be off by more than 100 years!  In this country, James Fenimore Cooper was publishing his frontier stories in a cheap paperback form as early as 1823.  These books were the forerunner to story magazines, and eventually to many authors following suit.

In England, George Routledge began publishing his paperback "Railway Series" in 1848 with James Fenimore Cooper's THE PILOT.  Routledge went on to publish many more authors for this series.  For a fascinating account of Routledges's life, go to google.

The success of the advent of paperbacks was due largely to the developing railroad systems in both countries.  More people were traveling and more people needed a good book to keep them company!

We suspect THE GOOD EARTH is cited so often because it was so wildly successful and so widely distributed at the time.  But now you know the true story!

Next month:  The rise of the "Dime" novel.
November:  The unexpected story of Penguin Books

Summer Travel.     I have had two wonderful trips this summer.  The first was a car trip through Washington, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming and Oregon.  Along with visiting a good friend in Montana, we saw Custer's Last Stand, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore and attended the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas.

We also took a sailing trip, stopping at Kingston and Port Townsend before heading into the Canadian Gulf Islands.  We had many days of good wind and saw some beautiful scenery.  You can see from the picture how hard I was working!

What did I read?  First I read Barbara Delinsky's SUDDENLY, republished this year.  She always tells a good story and I enjoyed this one.  Easy, light summer reading.

I also read the biography of Harriet Spencer, sister to Georgiana (The Duchess) titled  PRIVILEGE AND SCANDAL and authored by Janet Gleeson.  The Spencer family had a serious addiction to gambling which eventually impoverished them. They didn't actually LIVE poor, however.  They used the  equivalent of credit cards, didn't pay their merchants and borrowed from their friends!

Because I had a lot of time to read (YES!) I also read John Hart's third novel THE LAST CHILD. His newest, released in July, 2011 is IRON HOUSE.  His books are part mystery, part quest, and always with something unusual to think about.

Happy Reading!
