GOOD NEWS!
Jean Auel's 6th (and final) book will be released March 2011
Long-awaited book six The Land of the Painted Caves in the hugely popular Earth's Children series comes almost a decade after The Shelter of Stones and concludes this prehistoric series of Ayla and her family.

Once again Jean Auel combines her brilliant narrative skills and appealing characters with a remarkable re-creation of the way life was lived thousands of years ago, rendering the terrain, dwelling places, longings, beliefs, creativity and daily lives of the Ice Age Europeans as real to the reader as today's news. (www.fantasticfiction.co.uk)

According to Wikipedia Jean Auel was born in Chicago in 1934.  She now lives in Portland, OR.  Auel published the first in this series, The Clan of the Cave Bear, in 1990.  It is reported that after the wild success of this book, Crown Publishing paid Auel $25 million for the rights to publish the next two books.  Check out Wikipedia for more interesting information on how Auel researches her books and why it takes so long!

Want to read the series?  You can get early copies in this series in our store and also pre-order new copies of The Land of the Painted Caves. It will be available in both hard and soft cover.  The soft cover will be in trade size.  Estimated price is around $20 for each.

     The Rest of the Story...
I returned home from a two-week trip to London in time to celebrate my birthday on Halloween.  It's always fun for me because EVERYONE celebrates my day.  I'm always surprised at where costumes turn up:  Fred Meyers, my bank, Starbucks and McDonald's. FUN!  As you can see, Madison dressed as a cowgirl.  She loves her horses.

There were some pleasant surprises on this trip.  I met a woman from Auckland who was in London to research her book on the history of needlework in New Zealand.  The Victoria and Albert Museum is a particularly good place for her to do that research.  As I walked back from our dinner meeting, I thought about two things:  Isn't it wonderful that she is actively pursuing her dream?  and isn't it incredible that no matter how many books there are in the world, there is still room for more?

Author signings are always interesting and the one I attended at Waterstone's in Hampstead is worth mentioning.  Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveler's Wife) was interviewed about her new book Her Fearful Symmetry. Niffenegger said she wrote it with the intention of scaring the h...out of people.  Now, that got my attention.  I don't intentionally read scarey books.  I did, however, bring it home for Karen to read!  Next month I will tell you what Karen thought of the book!

One of the things I loved about this signing was the intelligent questions asked by the interviewer.  It was apparent that she had read both books as she asked questions about intent, style and approach that evoked thoughtful answers from Niffenegger.  It was a very enjoyable evening.

For those of you who are wondering what I read while I was gone, here's the list.  The biggest surprise was Marilynne Robinson's Gilead.  I should have been aware of this author since she is from the Pacific Northwest, but I wasn't.  It was a very intriguing book.

Bertrice Small   A Memory of Love
   Marilynne Robinson  Gilead

I am glad to be home.  Please stop by and say hello!

See you soon.
