| Greetings!
We are decorated for fall! Orange and red flowers in the vase, skeleton in the window, paper spiders scattered through-out the store. We love this time of year because the cold, crisp air signals another reason to curl up and read a good book.
The change in weather also signals another thought: it's time to think about holiday gifts! And we can help make your gift-giving thoughtful, cost-effective and easy! Check out the options in this newsletter and stop by the store for more ideas! We are here to help.
Please notice that our Book Group will meet the second Thursday, Oct. 14 this month only. For more information see the side panel or call us at the store.

Thoughtful, Cost-Effective and Easy GIFT IDEAS
USED BOOKS: Used books at Page 2 BOOKS are in fantastic condition and make great gifts! Recently Gayle's brother and sister-in-law attended the Willie Nelson concert at the Puyallup Fair. Gayle gave them a beautifully bound novel written by Willie Nelson (Did you KNOW he wrote novels? Neither did they!).
GIFT CERTIFICATES: Gift Certificates can be purchased in any amount. They are used like cash, so store credit applies before the purchase. This means that your best friend, Mom or other lucky recipient can stretch your gift even further. Gift Certificates send the message to your loved one that you pay attention to what they love and that what they love is books and more books!
BOOK MARKS: We have three beautiful choices for bookmarks. Our beaded bookmarks are made locally by one of our customers. If you haven't checked them out, be sure to notice them on your next trip in. Because they are custom-made, no two are alike and each one has a message of its own. And they are only $8 each.
Our magnetic bookmarks are impressive in their simplicity and sincere in their message. We have six designs to choose from. The vendor did not raise the price this year, so we are still able to offer you these bookmarks for $6 each. The quality and value far exceeds the cost of these bookmarks. They make great gifts for your book club members, secret pals and teachers. They are perfect thank you gifts and stocking stuffers. It's not unusual for customers to buy more than one at a time!
Lil' Bloomer tm Bookmarks are plantable bookmarks featuring full color die-cut seed paper shapes .Directions for planting are printed on the back. The seeds are a mix of annual and perennial wildflowers. These colorful bookmarks are just $2.50 each and come in three designs.

The Rest of the Story...
I have been painting walls for the past several days and am almost certain I am finished for awhile. I love to paint. It gives me a chance to think about things. And those things almost always turn to books I have been reading.
I recently finished The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman. This is a remarkable true WWII story of a husband and wife who ran the Warsaw Zoo in Poland. Through their courage and cunning they helped rescue over 300 Jews and other resisters. This book has some awkward moments and at times is difficult to follow, but the over-riding theme is enlightening and hopeful.
Robin Maxwell's To the Tower Born is another matter. I am used to the fine and integrated historical research done by such authors as Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory. This book, about the mystery of the missing princes Edward and Richard in 1483, was so full of holes as to ultimately be intolerable. I finished it, hoping it would redeem itself. It didn't.
After last month, when I mentioned Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle and Call Me Mrs. Miracle, I decided to read them both. Mrs. Miracle was so delightful I could see why they made it into a TV movie last year. However, as so many 'sequence' books are, I thought Call Me Mrs. Miracle was sadly lacking in plot and creative characterization. If you decide to read them both, please let me know what you think.
How we interact with books is part of the joy of reading. I like to read everything: the dedication, the acknowledgements and the notes, as well as the story. I also like to analyze the books I have read: why did I like it? why didn't I like it?
Because I like to review and re-live books, I love our Book Group. Getting together with this lovely group of people gives me a chance to rant and rave about books, authors, publishing trends and anything else in my book world. If you've been thinking about joining us, why wait? We'd love to have you with us.
See you soon,
Gayle |
