Gayle listening to Aiden read his story. | The Rest of the Story...
On May 28 I attended the "Young Author's Conference" at Glendale Lutheran Church. It was so much fun! The children had been working on their stories and making books so there was a lot of excitement in the air. The day had come for the children to share their works with invited guests: authors, parents and a bookstore owner (that's me!).
After the guests were introduced to the 48 children, we gathered into groups around a table. My table had 6 children of all ages. My instructions were to tell the children something about myself and then to listen to them read their stories. If we had time, we were to discuss the story.
I told them of a story I had written when I was 10 years old. I sent it into our local newspaper in Spokane and won the Tillikum contest! I received $1 and my story was published in the newspaper. I guess I got the bug, too, because here I am!
Around the table we went...a fantasy story about an eraser with a life of its own, an 'almost' true travel story set in Hawaii, informational reporting about kangaroos, and even a autobiographical story about playing on the computer every chance you get. We had time to talk about each story: were they true stories? where did they get their ideas? what was the best part of the project?
The atmosphere was so positive and I had a lovely time. Thank you Glendale Lutheran School for inviting me.
See you soon! Gayle |
