March 2010
 Greetings!

Have you been in our store lately? If so, you have noticed some changes.  Erin is now working Donna's shift on Mondays and Tuesdays and our new intern, Laura has joined us on Thursdays and Fridays.  We have also added premium hardback books and expanded our philosophy and science section.

Did you know that we recycle over 4000 books each month?  That means we put literally hundreds of new books on our shelves every month.  Many times we will shelve a whole series by one author or a brand new author (to our store).  It pays to shop with us frequently for the best selection.

If you are looking for a specific book we can help!  You can put your request on a WISHLIST by simply calling, emailing or stopping by the store.  We help you watch for it and call you when it comes in.  There is no charge for this service.

Can't wait?  We can order any book for you.  It usually takes about 2 weeks, but you will know it is coming!  How much does it cost?  We charge you whatever the bookseller is charging for the book and for shipping.  We do not add a percentage!  We simply charge you a flat fee of $4.  Last year we ordered over 50 books for our customers.  It's a great service.

Have you signed up for your FOREVER CARD?  It gives you 10% off your entire book purchase once each month...FOREVER!  Come by the store and we will show you how!

 DON'T MISS THIS!

Colt O'Brien Sees the Light; Cole, George Matthew, 2009, Dog Ear Publishing, LLC; ISBN: 978-160844-262-1; List price: $13.95

Author's description:  (from author website)
Colt O'Brien doesn't think that he has to prove anything. He is the most savvy computer technician at Highline High in Burien, Washington. The short, energetic senior, with his bright, colorful attire and cocky attitude, knows that he is the best.  Colt is cruising through senior year, but his life is about to be turned upside down.  Two freshman nerds start a computer class that will  challenge his credibility.  Three women will show him the meaning of love. One will show him the meaning of hate. And, his hidden psychic powers will emerge when he least expects them to.  Hang on Colt.

Erin (Page 2 BOOKS employee) writes the review:
Colt O'Brien Sees the Light is a fun and uplifting book to read.  It's easy style kept me interested and wanting to know more.  Colt's character gives a whole new meaning to 'nerd'.  Sometimes I got tired of his arrogance, but the people around him keep this book interesting.  It's their interactions that make the book believable. The lesson in this book is that it takes more than natural talent and potential to make it in the world of computers.  It's a hard lesson for Colt to learn.  I'd recommend this book to young adults and give it 3 1/2 stars!

You can order this book from the author's website.  Please let us know what you think and we will put your comments in our newsletter.
GayleThe Rest of the Story...
On Mondays I take care of our grandson, Jake.  I have figured out a way to hold my book while he naps in  my lap.  Talk about double dipping in the joy department!

One of the books I finished this month was Pulitzer Prize winning Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Stout. This collection of 13 short stories, about people in a small town in Maine, are connected by Olive Kitteridge. Sometimes she is the lead character and sometimes she just has a bit part.  It's through Olive's life and non-life that I experienced such a sense of sadness and hopelessness.  Since I don't like those themes, I really didn't like this book.

EXCEPT I admired and enjoyed the beautiful, poetical writing and clever attention to detail.  Oh, and then, I would think about the episodes in Olive's life at odd times during the day.  Finally, I annoyed my friends, family and our Book Group with analysis and lessons learned from 'a book I didn't like' .  And now I am writing to you about it.  This is a book that is not letting me go!

What do you do with a book like this?  I'd love to hear from you.  Do we recommend a book because it's well written or because we return to it time and again?  Or do we withhold a recommendation because we are disturbed by its themes, its message, the tone or the outcome?  OR do we recommend a book BECAUSE we are disturbed?

See you soon!

 KINDLES, KINDLES EVERYWHERE!
Everywhere we look we see ads for Kindle, Amazon's wireless reading device. We are curious, to say the least, so last month we asked you, our customers, to tell us if you are using a Kindle and what kind of experience you are having.
The reviews are mixed, as we expected.  One customer wrote that she received a Kindle for Christmas and is hopelessly in love.  She said she didn't expect to like it so much, but that she uses it everywhere.  To find out this customer's 8 Reasons to Love a Kindle, check out our website.
Not everyone is in love with their Kindle, though.  If you want to read a particular book, customers report that many new releases simply aren't available.  It seems the publishers are balking at doing business with an exclusionary source (Amazon).  Customers are also reporting higher than usual prices for books they want. A recent article in the New York Times warns that digital doesn't mean 'cheap' as there are still overhead and author payments to be made.
Another obvious and critical downside is that we can't share our book with our friends and family unless we want to share our Kindle, too. Amazon restrictions and sheer feasibility restrict our ability to pass our favorite book to a friend saying "You're going to love this!."
Stay tuned as we watch the world of publishing shift once again.
BabyWe ARE Making A Difference!
We continue to deliver your donations of food to our local Highline Food Bank each Tuesday.

According to director Mike Werle there is never enough baby food to satisfy the demand.  Also, our Food Bank is seeing a huge increase in sheer numbers of families in distress.

Encourage everyone you know to donate each and every week.  Bring your food donations Page 2 BOOKS anytime during our open hours.
Food is at the heart of literacy.
