Donna_2010
A FOND FAREWELL
As of January 22, 2010, Donna has decided to officially retire.  We are all going to miss you, Donna.

If you shopped with us on Monday and Tuesday afternoons you were always treated to Donna's quick smile and gentle hello.  She also became a whiz at re-stocking our books.  One minute there would be a stack to be put away and the next minute, they were shelved!  Many of you were helped to find the perfect book.  Donna has been an important member of our team for almost three years and we are extra grateful to her for all the times she stepped in to help.

Donna lives in Burien, so if you see her be sure to tell her how much she is missed!

Erin Sloan will be working on Monday and Tuesday afternoons for the forseeable future.

One of our best selling authors, Robert B. Parker, died on January 19 at the age of 77.  Many authors cite Parker as their mentor in writing crime novels.  He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and his readership.  He is best known for his Spenser series.  His newest Jesse Stone novel, Split Image is scheduled for release this February.

We have a very large selection of Robert B. Parker Hardbacks.  Many of them are first editions.  Please stop by the store and take a look.  Or call us for more information.
GayleThe Rest of the Story...

Recently my husband Rick and I drove to Bellingham to visit Village Books , one of our other favorite bookstores.  We wanted to check out their 'print on demand' Expresso Book Machine.  It was amazing.  It reminded me of seeing one of the first computers years ago when I was at Washington State University.  Big and bold. I expect this machine, as with computers, will be refined into something small and sleek.  For now, it, too, is big and bold.

The Expresso Book Machine has two purposes:  1) to print on demand any book residing within the public domain and 2) to print books for self-publishing authors.

For the wanna-be published authors, Village Books offers a consulting service to take your book from start to finish.  VB offers advice (for a fee) on registration, licensing, copyrights, ISBN and Library of Congress.  They also help with lay-out and design, book covers and even font choices. Finally, they offer to SELL your book on-line and in their store.  If you want more information, check out Village Books' Guide to Self-Publishing by Lindsey McGuirk and Rod Burton. It's available on their website.

I also looked more closely at printing books on demand.  I was impressed with the quality of paper, binding and 'feel' of the books they had on display.  I wasn't as impressed with the price of the books.  Most books appeared to cost $15 and up.  I am sure there are exceptions, but I was put off by the sticker price.

I was also put off by the unhelpful staff.  Admittedly, we were there on Sunday and the staff member wasn't 'in charge' of this project.  However, it was like pulling teeth to get any information from him.  The irony was that all the information was displayed on a back wall.  All he would have had to do was POINT!  Ah, well.

There is another Expresso Book Machine at Third Place Books in Lake City.  Let me know if you are up that way and happen to see it.  I'd love to know your thoughts.

See you soon!
Gayle
